It’s really tragic the way Plateau people, especially in and around Jos and areas like Bokkos, just get attacked and murdered repeatedly. It’s constantly happening and one feels that something seriously is not being done to assist.
The lives of people, the burning of houses, the families losing members – but that’s never good enough. Because the biggest question still is: Why is Jos involved every single time?
Every time there is an attack, the government talks. We hear “We’re investigating,” or “We will prosecute the attackers.” But after all the talk, nothing happens. The same thing keeps on happening. Is this how we are to live?
General Sani Abacha once made the statement, “If an insurgency lasts more than 24 hours, then the government has a hand in it.” That statement makes you think, because the killings in Jos have been going on not just days or weeks, but years. If the government isn’t involved, then why can’t they end it?
Villages of Jos, Bokkos, Mangu, and Barkin Ladi are being attacked repeatedly. Between December 2023 and February 2024, over 1,300 have been killed. But we do not see anything serious being done, just lip service. Why is it that if something happens in Abuja or Lagos, the government acts fast—but regarding Jos, they turn a blind eye?
The government must know that Plateau is a part of Nigeria too. People here must be able to stay in peace. We want real security, not just soldiers who stay in town but leave the villagers vulnerable. We want functioning checkpoints, more security officers who are properly trained, and support for community vigilantes.
Let’s stop pretending. The people are tired. The tears are too numerous. Enough of promises. Let action be louder than words. Let government demonstrate that they care.
This killing has to stop. Plateau deserves peace. Nigeria deserves better.
