Following the recent flood incident that affected communities in Yola South Local Government Area of Adamawa State, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Upper Benue River Basin Development Authority (UBRBDA), Dr. Mahmud Sanusi Mohammed, has conducted an on-the-spot technical assessment of an ongoing dam construction in Kofsopah District, Fufore LGA.
The urgent visit was in response to growing public concern linking the ongoing construction to the flooding experienced in downstream areas.
The intervention was carried out under the directive of the Honourable Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, who instructed the Authority to investigate the situation and provide expert findings.
Dr. Mahmud Sanusi Mohammed personally led a team of seasoned engineers and technical officers from the Authority to the remote site, located around Uki Hill.
The dam project, allegedly being executed by a Chinese mining company, has drawn attention due to environmental and safety concerns raised by residents and stakeholders.
During the visit, the team conducted a comprehensive physical inspection of the structure, including its layout and catchment zone.
The Managing Director reiterated the Authority’s firm commitment to ensuring that all hydraulic infrastructure within the Upper Benue Basin adheres to national safety standards and environmental protection measures.
A detailed technical report, containing observations and professional recommendations, is currently being compiled for submission to the Honourable Minister for appropriate action.
This proactive mission underscores UBRBDA’s critical role in safeguarding water infrastructure and protecting communities from negative hydrological impacts across its operational areas.
