In a bid to foster critical thinking and intellectual development among youths, Senator (Rev) Binos Dauda Yaroe sponsored a chess tournament that brought together secondary schools from across Adamawa State.

A passionate chess enthusiast, Senator Yaroe who represents Adamawa Southern Senatorial District believes the game offers numerous mental benefits. His sponsorship aimed to introduce students, particularly those in secondary schools, to the strategic advantages of chess.

Speaking to the press after the event, Senator Yaroe stated that he decided to fund the tournament in support of Vivian Ibrahim’s initiative to promote chess, especially among Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the state.

“Chess is a mind-developing game that engages individuals constructively and keeps them off the streets,” he said. “When Vivian approached me with the idea, I fully embraced it and offered to sponsor the event.”

Impressed by the strong turnout of students, the senator encouraged participants to pursue activities that nurture their intellect and character.

Vivian Ibrahim, founder of Queenvee Chess Academy, highlighted how chess has transformed her life, creating opportunities to network with influential personalities both locally and internationally. She praised Senator Yaroe for being a responsive and supportive figure, noting that this is his second time sponsoring the event.

“Chess is more than a game, it’s a life guide,” she said. “It demands strategy, sharpens the brain, and helps prevent memory loss in old age. In chess, you go to war with your mind.”

Ibrahim added that this was the third edition of the tournament and emphasized her goal of promoting social interaction among children in IDP camps and their peers outside.

Nugwa Timothy and Yohanna Bulus, winners in the female and male categories respectively, expressed joy at their achievements and described chess as a game for individuals with strategic thinking and deep reasoning skills.

EYN IDP Camp Malko’i claimed the top spot in the tournament, while St. Peter’s Junior Seminary and GDSS Karewa secured second and third places respectively.

The event officially titled Senator Binos Dauda Yaroe Schools Chess Tournament—was organized by Queenvee Chess Academy in collaboration with the Nigeria School Sports Federation and proudly sponsored by Senator Binos Dauda Yaroe.
