Promote Gender Equality In Society – Idris Advises Corps Members

By Sani Adamu Hassan

Members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) have been encouraged to join hands together with the community as well as religious leaders in ensuring gender equality in the society.

The Head of Gender Mrs. Idris Hadiza gave the advice during a paper presentation on Gender Equality and Analysis Tools to members of Batch A stream 2 corps who are undergoing training at Dakin Gari Orientation Camp, Kebbi state.

Mrs. Idris Hadiza said Corps Members will play a vital role in reducing gender inequality because they serve as the federal government present in their Places of Primary Assignment (PPA).

She explained that gender refers to social attributes, roles, and opportunities associated with being male or female in society by determining what is socially expected.

According to her, gender equality does not mean men and women will become the same but rather women’s and men’s rights, responsibilities, contributions, and opportunities will not depend on whether they are born male or female.

The head of gender added that the concept implies the state of equal ease of access to resources and opportunities regardless of gender including economic, participation, decision-making, and the state of valuing different behaviors, aspirations and needs.

Mrs. Idris revealed that Gender analysis helps to find the best strategies and solutions to address the different needs and dynamics of men and women living in poverty.

She therefore mentioned some of the ways to carry out gender analysis including formal interviews and surveys, mapping, household interviews, focus group discussions (FGDs) among others.
