The Presidency has confirmed that work is currently underway at the 150,000 barrels per day plant of the Port Harcourt Refining Company in Rivers State. This was disclosed by the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, after joining a fact-finding team at the 60,000 barrels per day refinery.

According to Onanuga, the refinery has two plants: the 60,000 barrels per day facility and the 150,000 barrels per day plant. The 60,000 barrels per day refinery is operating at 70% of its installed capacity and plans to increase production shortly. Onanuga also confirmed that the refinery receives regular crude oil supplies, contrary to claims of a shortage.

The Port Harcourt Refining Company has a combined capacity of 210,000 barrels per day, with the old refinery commissioned in 1965 and the new refinery commissioned in 1989 ² ³. The refinery processes various petroleum products, including kerosene, low-pour fuel oil, liquefied petroleum gas, diesel, and petrol.

Onanuga commended the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) for reviving the refinery, which was previously considered a “dead asset” ¹. The refinery’s revamping work has transformed it into a state-of-the-art facility, with workers busy dismantling old parts and installing new ones.
