A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former gubernatorial candidate under the Alliance for Democracy (AD) in Bauchi State Alhaji Musa Umar Gwaskwaram has called on Governor Bala Mohammed to ensure a balanced distribution of emirate councils across the state by creating more emirates in Bauchi North (Katagum Zone).

The PDP stalwart made the call in an interview with newsmen on Wednesday in Bauchi

Gwaskwaram while commending the governor for signing into law the Bauchi State Chieftaincy (Appointment and Deposition) Law 2025 and the Zaar Chiefdom Law 2025, which established 13 additional emirate councils in the state.

He noted that the distribution of the newly created emirates has tilted in favour of Bauchi South and Central zones, leaving the Northern zone with fewer traditional institutions.

“As it stands now, Bauchi South has nine emirates, Bauchi Central has six, while Bauchi North has only four.

“To promote fairness, inclusion, and equity, I urge the governor to look inward and create more emirates in Bauchi North.

This will strike a balance among the three senatorial zones and foster unity in the state.”,” he explained. “

The PDP chieftain, who hails from Bauchi South, stressed that his call for more emirates in the North is not based on regional sentiment but on the need for equal representation and development across the constituencies of the state.

He highlighted several benefits of creating additional emirates, including cultural recognition, administrative efficiency, political inclusion, and enhanced socio-economic development.

According to him, such moves promote cultural preservation while improving local governance and service delivery.

He further applauded Governor Bala Mohammed for setting up a committee to oversee the creation of emirates and chiefdoms, describing it as a progressive step toward modernizing traditional governance structures and fostering inclusivity.

“The creation of emirates reflects the governor’s commitment to promoting traditional institutions as partners in development.

However, balancing the number of emirates among all zones will strengthen unity, reduce marginalization, and ensure every community feels recognized,” he added.

He urged the state government to consider this balance as a crucial step toward sustaining peace, inclusiveness, and equal development across Bauchi State.
