Patients and relatives at Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital, MAUTH Yola, Adamawa state, northeast Nigeria have commended the federal government for introducing free healthcare delivery services in tertiary health institutions, coordinated by the federal ministry of health.

The patients and relatives have also commended the management of Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital, for commencing a 48-hour free emergency medical services, under the National Emergency Medical and Ambulance Service (NEMAS), a scheme, covering admission, investigations, treatment, and surgeries.

The Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care (CEMОС) component of the free healthcare services being rendered in MAUTH Yola covers all Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BEmONC) services, plus surgical capacity and blood transfusion, to address obstetric and newborn emergencies, such as severe bleeding, infection and eclampsia.

MAUTH Yola has also keyed into the federal government’s free Vesicovaginal Fistula (VVF) repair and emergency obstetric care, including free cesarean sections.

Commenting on the development, the patients said they were surprised that they were not asked to pay money for any service rendered at the Accident and Emergency unit of the hospital, “laboratory tests, radiology investigations surgery and medications were done free, including admission within 48 hours, which is the most critical live saving.

“It was an emergency delivery, in avoidance of complications, the primary health care I go for the maternity asked my husband to bring me to the teaching hospital immediately; we were afraid of the hospital bills, we would not have the capacity to foot.

“However, it’s all about life saving, so he brought me here and everything was fast; my husband was surprised that he was not asked to pay for anything; admission, investigations, drugs or treatment.

“When he enquired about the hospital bills, he was told to pray for a bouncing baby because the federal government has taken care of the hospital bills. It was so unbelievable, but that’s the truth. We remain grateful,” testimony of a lady who has an in-born baby under hospital care.

“It’s indeed succour to the poor family that will find it difficult if not impossible to foot the hospital bills; we’re indeed grateful to the federal government and the management of MAUTH Yola for introducing this scheme, we can refer to as dividends of democracy,” a patient- relative at the A&E commended.
