Oxfam, an international non-governmental organization, in collaboration with the Taraba state government, has conducted a three-day capacity-building training for state and local government finance and budget directors. The training focused on enhanced accounting and budgeting systems.
According to Samuel Lashom, Oxfam’s Project Officer, the training was organized under the Strengthen Civic Engagement Platforms and Systems for Improved Services (SCEPSIS) project. The project aims to promote good governance, improve service delivery, and enhance physical responsibility.
Lashom emphasized the importance of civic engagement in promoting good governance, noting that the project has identified capacity gaps in open budget practices. He advised participants to take note of the key takeaways to create a shift in civic engagement platforms and systems, leading to improved service delivery.
The workshop’s objective, as stressed by Oxfam Project Coordinator Daniel Abah, is to build the capacity of state, local government, and civil society organization officials on International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS). The training aims to improve consistency, comparability, and alignment of state and local government financial and accounting systems with best practices.
Participants, including Amina Ayuba, Deputy Director of the Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and DanAsabe Ajiduku Ahmadu, Director of Budget, expressed gratitude to the organizers, acknowledging that the training broadened their knowledge.
