The Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Ondo State has strongly condemned the local government election results announced by the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC), accusing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of orchestrating widespread irregularities.
ODIEC declared on Sunday that APC had swept all chairmanship and councillorship positions across the 18 local government areas of the state. However, the SDP, through its State Chairman, Mr. Gbenga Akinbuli, has rejected the results and demanded the election’s cancellation.
In a statement on Monday, Akinbuli alleged several electoral malpractices, including ballot stuffing, voter intimidation, and the absence of key electoral forms. He also disclosed that election results in Odigbo and Ile Oluji were written on plain sheets rather than official result forms, further undermining the credibility of the process.
The SDP also criticized the role of security agencies, particularly the police, in the alleged irregularities. Akinbuli accused officers in the Ore Division of aiding APC supporters in intimidating opposition members and arresting SDP candidates who raised concerns about the process. He called on the Inspector General of Police to investigate the conduct of security personnel during the elections.
Reacting to the allegations, Ondo State APC Chairman, Mr. Ade Adetimehin, dismissed the claims as baseless. He described the election as peaceful, transparent, and credible, commending ODIEC for organizing what he referred to as a fair process.
Despite APC’s defense, the SDP remains firm in its position, calling for urgent action to address electoral fraud and ensure future elections reflect the will of the people.
