Modibbo Adama University, Yola, has commissioned a state-of-the-art Microbiology Commercial Centre aimed at revolutionizing microbiological and molecular research and services in Northeast Nigeria.

The centre, established by the Department of Microbiology, is designed to serve as a premier hub offering advanced scientific solutions to a wide range of stakeholders, including industries, hospitals, environmental agencies, and academic institutions.

At the commissioning ceremony, the Head of Department, Dr. Zubaidah Hassan, welcomed guests and expressed heartfelt gratitude to the university management, the host faculty, and members of the department for their dedication and support.

She particularly commended the Vice-Chancellor for his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to bringing the project to life.

The centre, commissioned under the theme “A Precision You Can Trust,” is equipped with cutting-edge technologies and tools tailored to meet global standards.

Its service offerings range from antimicrobial testing and pathogen detection to DNA/RNA amplification, food quality analysis, and more.

The facility is expected to play a pivotal role in promoting scientific accuracy, rapid diagnostics, and compliance with international research and safety standards.

The commissioning was performed on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Iliyasu Audu, who emphasized the institution’s focus on applied research and its relevance to solving real-world problems.

He reaffirmed the university’s dedication to research that not only contributes to academic knowledge but also addresses societal challenges.

Also in attendance were Professor Aliyu Bawuro Mustapha, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration); the Dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences, Professor Bello Y. Idi; and Heads of Departments from Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Science Laboratory Technology (SLT), and Plant Science.

Senior academics and notable scholars, including Professor M. I. Ja’afaru and Professor J. H. Doughari, graced the event, demonstrating the department’s wide recognition and strong professional base.

The Microbiology Commercial Centre is structured to provide services in six key areas. These include industrial solutions such as enzyme characterization and food and water quality testing; medical services like antimicrobial resistance profiling, biomarker discovery, and pathogen detection; and environmental applications including biosurveillance, biodegradation, and biofermentation consortia.

The centre also offers molecular biology services such as DNA/RNA isolation, PCR amplification, and bioinformatics analysis. In the area of general microbiology, it handles microbial culture, identification, preservation (including freeze-drying), and maintains a microbial culture collection. Additionally, it offers capacity-building programs through short courses, training sessions, and individualized consultations.

The launch of the Microbiology Commercial Centre marks a significant milestone in Modibbo Adama University’s pursuit of scientific excellence and societal relevance. It sets the stage for stronger collaboration between academia and industry and enhances the university’s role in delivering innovative, research-driven solutions that address both local and national development needs.
