The International Organization for Peacebuilding and Social Justice has launched a series examining delayed justice, with the Hudu Yunusa-Ari case taking center stage. The case, which raises serious questions about the electoral process and the rule of law in Nigeria, is the first in a series aimed at scrutinizing prolonged legal proceedings.

According to a statement signed by Sam Over, Project Manager, swift and transparent justice is essential for maintaining public trust in national institutions. The unresolved allegations against Hudu Yunusa-Ari have drawn attention to issues of electoral integrity and accountability, especially in light of controversies stemming from the 2023 general elections in Adamawa State.

Officials emphasize that a delay in resolving such critical cases undermines the credibility of the judicial system. “Justice is the foundation of democracy,” a spokesperson for the organization stated, noting that prolonged legal disputes can erode public confidence and encourage impunity.

The case has already sparked debate among legal experts, who point to potential violations of several Nigerian laws. The allegations involve breaches of Section 120 and Section 123 of the Electoral Act (2022), which criminalize the unlawful announcement of election results and electoral fraud, as well as Sections 364 and 366 of the Nigerian Criminal Code concerning forgery and abuse of office.

The organization has called on the Federal Government, the judiciary, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to expedite the legal process. “Every day without resolution weakens our democracy,” the statement added, urging all stakeholders to prioritize the delivery of electoral justice.

As the legal proceedings continue, the outcome of the Hudu Yunusa-Ari case is seen as a critical test of Nigeria’s commitment to upholding justice and democratic principles. The case stands as a stark reminder that when justice is delayed, the integrity of the entire democratic system is at risk.
