The Gungji, Shiwer, Dokpai road in Plateau State has long been a critical infrastructure need for the people of Kanam Local Government Area. This vital link, which connects several rural communities, has remained in deplorable condition hampering mobility, limiting economic activity, and posing daily hardship to thousands of residents.
However, the situation took a new turn when Governor Caleb Mutfwang reportedly halted construction efforts on the road initiated by Hon. Yusuf Adamu Gagdi, the distinguished Member representing Pankshin/Kanke/Kanam Federal Constituency in the National Assembly.
This decision has since raised eyebrows and stirred deep concerns among constituents who had looked forward to long-awaited relief. For many residents, the move appeared politically motivated, leaving people to wonder whether political interests have taken precedence over the welfare of the citizenry.
Governor Mutfwang, the people are asking: How far have you gone with the construction of the Gungji, Shiwer, Dokpai road since you stopped the federal lawmaker from taking up the project? The expectations are high, and the need is urgent. Silence or delays will only worsen the already fragile trust between government and grassroots communities.
Hon. Yusuf Gagdi, known for his proactive leadership and developmental efforts, had embarked on various constituency projects across the three LGAs he represents. His attempt to intervene in the road’s construction was widely applauded until it was unexpectedly interrupted.
Infrastructure should never become a political battleground. Roads do not ask for party identity before serving the people. The Gungji ,Shiwer, Dokpai road is not just a stretch of earth it is a lifeline for farmers, students, traders, and health workers.
The people of Kanam are not interested in who takes the credit; they are only interested in seeing action. They seek a functioning road, not broken promises. Leadership, after all, should be measured not by who holds the authority, but by what is delivered with that authority.
As the rains return and the road continues to deteriorate, the question remains: Will the Plateau State Government rise above politics and put the people first?
The time to act is now.
