Kano—A demolition exercise in Rimin Zakara, Ungogo Local Government Area of Kano State, turned deadly as four people were feared dead following a violent clash between residents and security operatives.

The demolition, reportedly involving properties allegedly belonging to Bayero University Kano (BUK), sparked chaos when residents attempted to resist the operation. Witnesses said the exercise occurred unexpectedly at night, resulting in two fatalities on the spot and two more succumbing to injuries later.

Eyewitness Ishaq Habibu claimed residents were not given prior notice. “Rumors circulated during the day, but nothing happened until nightfall when the demolition began unexpectedly,” he explained.

Habibu alleged that security operatives shot six people during the confrontation. Two died instantly, while others were rushed to the hospital, where they later passed away. He added that due diligence was conducted with relevant authorities before building his home in the area.

The exercise was reportedly carried out by officials from the Ministry of Land and Physical Planning and the Kano Urban Planning and Development Authority (KNUPDA). Spent bullet shells were found at the scene.

Efforts to get comments from the Ministry of Land and KNUPDA were unsuccessful. The state government is expected to issue an official statement soon.
