BUK Governing Council Appoints Prof Haruna Musa as 12th Vice-Chancellor

The Governing Council of Bayero University, Kano (BUK) has appointed Professor Haruna Musa as the institution’s 12th Vice-Chancellor.

The Governing Council of Bayero University, Kano (BUK) has appointed Professor Haruna Musa as the institution’s 12th Vice-Chancellor.

The announcement was made during a council meeting held on Thursday, July 3, 2025, where he was officially presented with his letter of appointment.

Professor Musa, a distinguished scholar in Polymer Chemistry and the current Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), is set to assume office on August 18, 2025.

He will succeed Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, whose tenure ends in August after five years of impactful leadership.

The appointment letter was handed over by the Chairman of the Governing Council, Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, in the presence of council members, outgoing Vice-Chancellor Prof. Abbas, and University Registrar Haruna Aliyu. Dr. Gawuna congratulated Prof. Musa and wished him a successful term in office.

Citing the content of the appointment letter, Dr. Gawuna said: The Governing Council of Bayero University, Kano, in the exercise of the powers conferred on it by Section 4 of the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Amendment Act, 2003, at its meeting held on Thursday, 3rd July 2025, considered the recommendation of the Selection Board and hereby approves your appointment as the substantive Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano, for a single term of five years with effect from August 18, 2025.”

Prof. Musa’s appointment was widely celebrated across the BUK community, with commendations from principal officers, academic staff, and members of the Senate and Congregation, many of whom expressed confidence in his leadership capabilities.

He emerged as the top candidate during the University’s 7th Congregation Parley, winning overwhelming support.

In a closely contested race involving five candidates, Prof. Musa secured 853 votes. His nearest rivals, Prof. Mahmoud Umar Sani and Prof. Muhammad Sani Gumel, received 367 and 364 votes respectively.

With high expectations for continuity and innovation, the university community looks forward to Prof. Musa building on the foundations laid by his predecessor and advancing BUK’s academic excellence.
