The push by the Speaker of the 8th Adamawa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Bathiya Wesley, to elevate the Adamawa State College of Education, Hong, to a full-fledged university gained traction on Friday as the proposed legislation passed its second reading.
The bill, titled A Bill for a Law to Repeal the Adamawa State College of Education Hong Law No. 5 of 2015 and to Re-enact the Adamawa State University of Education Hong Law, seeks to transform the institution into the Adamawa State University of Education, Hong.
Sponsored by Rt. Hon. Bathiya Wesley, who represents the Hong constituency, the bill was presented on the House floor by the Deputy Majority Leader, Hon. Ahmed Jingi Belel, during Friday’s plenary session.
If enacted, the law will empower the institution to offer degree and diploma programmes in education, expand access to higher education for state indigenes, promote learning and research, and serve as a hub for educational theory and practice.
The bill also outlines the provision of full-time courses in teaching and training across disciplines such as arts, social sciences, humanities, education, and applied sciences. It further proposes the organization of conferences, seminars, and workshops relevant to these areas of learning.
Following deliberations on the bill’s significance, Speaker Bathiya Wesley, who presided over the session, put the motion to a voice vote, which was unanimously supported by the lawmakers.
The bill was subsequently referred to the House Committee on Education and Human Capital Development for detailed scrutiny and further legislative action.
