The Bauchi State Government has announced a renewed commitment to strengthening tobacco control laws through a strategic collaboration with the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC). to curb tobacco consumption, improve public health, and mitigate the environmental consequences of smoking across the state.
Key partners in the initiative include the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and the Ministry of Housing and Environment, both of which have pledged to work with CISLAC to design and implement effective tobacco control policies.
The pledge was made during an advocacy visit to the two ministries on Thursday in Bauchi.
Commissioner for Housing and Environment, Mr. Danlami Kawule, commended CISLAC’s commitment to advancing tobacco regulation and reaffirmed the government’s support for initiatives aimed at reducing smoking and protecting citizens’ wellbeing. Describing tobacco use as both a health and environmental concern,
Kawule called for a multi-stakeholder public hearing involving traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups, and relevant agencies to develop a comprehensive legal framework for tobacco control in Bauchi State.
Similarly, Commissioner for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Sani Dambam, represented by Permanent Secretary Alhaji Dauda Mahmoud, stressed the urgent need to address tobacco-related diseases.
He said the ministry remains committed to partnering with CISLAC to promote healthier lifestyles and reduce tobacco exposure.
CISLAC’s Senior Programme Officer, Mr. Solomon Adoga, explained that the visit is part of the Tobacco Tax in Africa Project, supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation through Tax Justice Africa. aims to make tobacco products less affordable through tax reforms and sustained policy engagement.
Adoga noted that Bauchi’s proactive response reflects strong political will to safeguard public health and foster sustainable development.
