Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Dr. Leon Usigbe, the Abuja Bureau Chief of the African Newspapers of Nigeria (ANN), publishers of the Nigerian Tribune titles.
In a condolence message on Sunday, Atiku described the late journalist as a man of conviction and courage, recalling a personal encounter with Usigbe following his survival of an armed attack last year while covering caucus meetings of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
“I am saddened about the passing of Dr. Leon Usigbe. He was a journalist with a conviction. This much I noticed about him when I spoke with him after he survived an armed attack in the line of duty,” Atiku said.
He further noted that he had personally spoken with Usigbe’s Editor to convey his condolences to the management and staff of ANN.
“I shared my pains and condolences with the management and staff of the Nigerian Tribune,” he added.
Atiku offered prayers for the bereaved family, asking God to grant them strength in this difficult time.
“I especially pray for his family to have the fortitude to bear this huge loss. May the Almighty accept his soul. Ameen,” he concluded.
