Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reiterated his belief that agriculture remains Nigeria’s most sustainable economic pillar, emphasizing its limitless potential compared to exhaustible resources like oil and minerals.
Atiku made this assertion on 8 July 2025 during a visit to CSS Global Integrated Farms Limited, located in Gora, Nasarawa State.
The farm, founded by Professor John Kennedy Opara, is a major agro-enterprise and training hub for young entrepreneurs across the country.
Describing the visit as an “eye-opener,” Atiku praised the transformative potential of agribusiness when supported by a conducive environment. Addressing a gathering of young agripreneurs at the farm, he noted:
“Agriculture should be the mainstay of Nigeria’s economy. Everything else, minerals, gas, oil will one day run out. The only thing that will not finish is the land. If you’re looking at long-term investment and economic prospects, you should invest in agriculture. It provides the food we eat, and we can even export it. We won’t need to import food if we do this right.”
He acknowledged the present security challenges facing farmers, which have forced many to flee their land, but expressed optimism that the situation is temporary:
“Yes, there are security challenges affecting our farmers, but I believe it’s a transitional phase. We must not lose hope.”
Atiku encouraged the trainees to treat agriculture as a serious career path, one capable of ensuring a prosperous future. He also extended his congratulations to Professor John Kennedy Opara for his commitment and vision.
In response, Professor Opara expressed deep appreciation for Atiku’s visit, reflecting on his mentorship during his time in public service:
“He taught me a lot about administration. He laid the foundation for fairness, equity, and justice during his tenure as Vice President. He was an inspiration to us in government, and he is a farmer himself.”
The visit underscores the former Vice President’s ongoing advocacy for agricultural reform and youth empowerment through enterprise.
