The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, has distanced itself from a group of youths who disrupted a public hearing by the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund over a bill seeking to amend the university’s establishment law.
The university made this known in a press release issued by its Directorate of Information and Public Relations, Office of the Vice-Chancellor, and signed by the Director, Zailani Bappa, on Friday.
The Senate Committee had commenced a public hearing on Thursday, 11th December 2025, on a bill sponsored by the Senator representing Bauchi South Senatorial District, Senator Shehu Buba, which seeks to amend the law establishing ATBU from a Science and Technology-based university to a conventional university.
According to the statement, the hearing, which began at about 2:00 pm, was adjourned following a disruption caused by a group of youths who claimed to be alumni of the university. Some media reports had identified the individuals as ATBU graduates.
Reacting to the development, the university described the individuals as impostors and firmly dissociated itself from their actions.
“ATBU prides itself on producing disciplined graduates who have remained good ambassadors of the institution across the globe for over four decades,” the statement said, adding that the university is confident that its genuine alumni would never engage in actions capable of disrespecting the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
While expressing regret over the incident that led to the adjournment of the hearing, the university cautioned stakeholders to be wary of individuals falsely claiming to represent or speak on behalf of ATBU in future engagements.
The university reiterated its commitment to upholding discipline, integrity and respect for constituted authorities.
