The Adamawa State Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, in collaboration with the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), has finalized preparations for the much-anticipated 2025 Fresh Air Governor’s Cup as the tournament’s match draw was successfully conducted in Yola.
The draw was supervised by Barrister Wali Yakubu, the Adamawa State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, who chairs the organizing committee.
This event marks the revival of the Governor’s Cup, which has not been held in Yola for over a decade. The championship is scheduled to kick off on 16th February 2026 and will feature teams from all 21 local government areas of the state.
In his remarks, Barrister Yakubu credited Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri’s commitment to revitalizing sports in the state, which he described as part of the administration’s transformative agenda.
“This initiative is pivotal in reviving the glory of sports in Adamawa. We thank the Governor for his unwavering support for youth and sports development,” he said.
The seven-day tournament is sponsored by Suleiman Gangkuba, the Adamawa State ALGON Chairman, and organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development.
Gangkuba also commended Governor Fintiri for prioritizing sports and called on stakeholders across the state to contribute to the success of the championship.
He emphasized that the tournament provides a platform to nurture young talent and promote unity across the state.
The opening match will see Yola North facing off against Guyuk Local Government at the FCE Football Pitch in Yola.
This match is expected to set the stage for what promises to be an exciting and unifying event for the people of Adamawa State.
Sports enthusiasts and supporters have been encouraged to actively participate in the tournament, cheering on their local teams and celebrating the return of the prestigious Governors Cup.
Organizers expressed optimism that the event would inspire a renewed interest in grassroots sports and serve as a springboard for future sporting achievements in the state.
