The Adamawa State Government, in partnership with the Federal University of Agriculture Mubi, has embarked on a significant agricultural initiative, deploying 49 improved crop varieties across all 21 Local Government Areas (LGA) of the state. This ambitious project includes enhanced strains of maize, sorghum, rice, cowpea, groundnuts, soybean, and sunflower.
In a concerted effort to bolster food security, the state government is also funding the cultivation of these improved crop varieties on a one-hectare plot of land. The harvested crops will be distributed to farmers next year, providing them with high-quality seeds to enhance productivity and resilience against food scarcity.
These initiatives are coordinated under the State Food Security Committee and spearheaded by Professor Bitrus Dawi Tarfa, Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture Mubi. “This collaborative effort is crucial and timely in addressing the pressing food security challenges in Adamawa State,” said Prof. Tarfa.
The deployment and multiplication of these improved crop varieties aim to significantly boost agricultural output, ensuring sustainable food production and economic stability for the state’s farming communities.
