The Adamawa State Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development has issued a directive prohibiting the organization, promotion, or participation in “Marker Day” celebrations across all public and private schools in the state, citing rising indiscipline and moral degradation among students.
In a circular dated July 29, 2025, and signed by the Honorable Commissioner, Dr. Umar Garba Pella, the ministry expressed deep concern over the increasing trend of such celebrations, which it described as disruptive and contrary to the values upheld in the education system.
The ministry noted that Marker Day activities are often associated with public display of lawlessness, societal disrespect, and acts of moral decay, which have no place within the educational environment. It stated that the decision to ban the celebrations was taken in response to the growing incidence of unruly behavior, erosion of cultural values, and security threats linked to the events.
“This decision is informed by increasing level of indiscipline and unruly behaviors, erosion of moral and cultural values, security concerns that contradict the core principles of education, disruptive, and responsible citizenship,” the circular read in part.
The commissioner directed all principals and proprietors of private schools in the state to ensure strict compliance with the directive, warning that any school found to be involved in the facilitation or tolerance of such events would face appropriate disciplinary actions.
“This is for your information and compliance, please,” the circular concluded.
The ministry’s latest move is part of ongoing efforts to instill discipline, protect educational standards, and uphold societal values across schools in Adamawa State.
