Bauchi awaits. Nigeria applauds. History remembers

Today marks the official retirement of a remarkable public servant, visionary leader, and patriotic Nigerian ‘Malam Bala Wunti’ who bows out after decades of sterling service to our great nation through the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL). His exit from public service signals not an end, but the dawn of a new chapter of even greater impact, particularly for the good people of Bauchi State.

Over the course of his illustrious career, Bala Wunti held several key positions within the NNPCL, leaving an indelible mark on Nigeria’s Oil and Gas sector. As Group General Manager, Health Safety Security and Environment (HSSE), the position he held in the last few months of his service, he was a steadfast guardian of environmental safety and public welfare. His previous roles  including Group General Manager  NAPIMS, Managing Director of Petroleum Products Marketing Company (PPMC), and Group General Manager Corporate Planning & Strategy placed him among the center of critical stakeholders who contributed immensely to Nigeria’s Oil and Gas Sector. He also served as Senior Adviser to five different GMDs of the NNPC, a testament to the trust and respect he commanded throughout his career.

Malam Bala’s leadership extended beyond corporate boardrooms. He was a key national figure in the review and amendment of the 1993 Deep Offshore Act, a reform that has significantly improved Nigeria’s revenue from oil production. These national assignments underscore his commitment to Nigeria’s economic growth and fiscal sustainability.

Yet, even with all his national responsibilities, Bala Wunti never forgot his roots. His country home Bauchi State benefited immensely from his tireless community development efforts facilitation of numerous NNPC intervention projects especially in higher institutions of learning.

Through his personal initiative ‘Wunti Al-khair Foundation’ Wunti has transformed lives across the state where championed:

* Education support

* Medical interventions

* Skills acquisition and youth empowerment

* Agricultural development through free fertilizer distribution

* Access to clean water via solar-powered boreholes

* Community lighting with solar installations

* Ramadan feeding programs

* Support for religious institutions and cultural heritage, including the construction of Bauchi Central Eid ground, Construction of Sheik Dahiru Bauchi Islamic Center, renovation of graveyards and mosques.

These humanitarian efforts are not just charity, they are a reflection of leadership that listens, acts, and delivers.

It is no surprise, therefore, that calls are growing louder across all 20 Local Government Areas of Bauchi State urging Malam Bala Wunti to contest for the office of Governor in 2027. The people have seen his capacity. They have felt his impact. They believe in his vision.

And truly, if there is anyone equipped with the knowledge, experience, and passion to transform Bauchi State, it is  Bala Wunti. His grasp of governance, strategic planning, infrastructure development, and social empowerment are exactly what Bauchi needs to move into a new era of progress and prosperity.

As we celebrate Malam Bala Wunti’s retirement from federal service, we also look forward with great hope that he will heed the people’s call and offer himself once again for service, this time to the land that raised him.
