A Tribute: Gwaram’s First District Head And The Honour Of Service

By Zakariyya Aliyu Gwaram

In the tradition of Arewa, leadership is not measured by loudness of voice nor by the weight of titles alone, but by ‘nauyin amana’ the burden of trust a man carries with humility, wisdom, and fear of God. It is in this noble mould that Alhaji (TPL) Abdullahi Muhammed Gwaram, Sarkin Shanun Misau and newly appointed District Head of Gwaram, stands tall calm like the old baobab tree whose shade comforts all, yet firm like the rock that anchors the land.

The people of Gwaram and Misau Emirate have not merely received a District Head; they have been entrusted with a man whose life is a testimony to the Sardauna’s timeless counsel:

“Aiki shi ne mutuncin mutum” meaning
…Service is the true dignity of man.

Born on 1st October, 1957 in historic Gwaram Ta Kari, a land that once stood as a frontier between Kanem-Borno and the Sokoto Caliphate, Abdullahi Muhammed Gwaram is a product of a community forged by resilience, scholarship, trade, and faith. Gwaram itself is a metaphor of endurance walled against slave raiders, enriched by agriculture, dyeing, weaving, and blacksmithing. From such soil, only men of substance emerge.

He is the son of late Sarkin Gwaram Muhammadu, himself a custodian of tradition, and today destiny has returned the staff of authority to the same lineage not by inheritance alone, but by merit, sacrifice, and proven integrity.

Alhaji Abdullahi Gwaram’s intellect is neither shallow nor ornamental; it is deep, disciplined, and purpose-driven. From Gwaram Primary School to GSS Misau, through the rigorous halls of ABU Zaria, and onward to the University of Nottingham, England, his academic journey reads like that of a man who understands that ‘limi haske ne’ knowledge is light.

Armed with degrees in Geography, Environmental Planning, an MBA, and international exposure in Urban Development in India, he embodies what the late Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto, meant when he said:

“Real education is that which prepares a man for service to his people.”

In public service, Abdullahi Muhammed Gwaram is known not as a showman, but as a quiet achiever. From his early days as a Town Planning Officer to his leadership roles in BASEPA, Misau Local Government, and national and international committees, his signature has always been competence, transparency, and calm authority.

As Commissioner for Lands and Survey, Bauchi State,he has brought the same values clarity of vision, fairness in administration, and respect for human dignity. In an era where power often intoxicates, he remains grounded, mindful of the Arewa proverb:

“Girma ba ya hana mutum sunkuyawa.” which translates
..Greatness does not prevent a man from bowing in humility.

Perhaps the most defining attribute of the new District Head of Gwaram is his “humility”. Despite global exposure and high office, he relates with the common man as an equal. His door is open, his ears attentive, his counsel sincere. He listens more than he speaks, and when he speaks, his words carry weight, not arrogance.

His honesty is not performative; it is habitual. In an age of shifting values, he remains a man whose “yes is yes”, and whose no is no. This is why trust follows him effortlessly among colleagues, subordinates, traditional institutions, and the grassroots.

As Magajin Garin Gwaram, Sarkin Shanun Misau, and now the 1st District Head of Gwaram. Alhaji Abdullahi Muhammed Gwaram represents the harmony between gargajiya da zamani tradition and modernity. He understands that the turban is not a crown of privilege, but a symbol of service, sacrifice, and accountability before God and man.

The restoration of Gwaram to District status under the visionary leadership of Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed CON, Kauran Daular Usmaniyya, is not accidental. It is a recognition of enduring peace, development, and collective aspiration and Abdullahi Gwaram is the right vessel for this historic phase.

As he assumes this sacred responsibility, the prayers of Gwaram, Misau Emirate, and Bauchi State go with him. May his reign be marked by justice, unity, development, and peace. May he walk in the footsteps of the great Arewa leaders who ruled with conscience and foresight.

In the words often attributed to the Sardauna:

“The greatness of a leader lies in his responsibility to his people.”

Indeed, Alhaji (TPL) Abdullahi Muhammed Gwaram has proven by intellect, character, and conduct that he is equal to this responsibility.

Gwaram has found a custodian.
Misau has found a bridge-builder.
Bauchi has found a servant-leader.

Allah ya ja Zamanin Hakimi da Albarka. Amin

Zakariyya Aliyu Gwaram writes from Karofin Madaki, Bauchi State.
