As the world prepares to celebrate World Environment Day 2025, Nigerians are invited to join the global movement to combat plastic pollution. This year’s theme, #BeatPlasticPollution, serves as a rallying cry for collective action to protect our dear planet.
The devastating impact of plastic pollution can not be overstated. Every year, 11 million tonnes of plastic waste leak into aquatic ecosystems, harming marine life and contaminating the food chain. Microplastics have also been found to accumulate in soil and water, affecting human health and the environment. The economic costs are staggering, with plastic pollution estimated to cost between $300 billion and $600 billion annually.
In Nigeria, we have a crucial role to play in reducing plastic pollution. By implementing policies to minimize single-use plastics, enhancing waste collection and recycling infrastructure, and educating citizens on eco-friendly habits, we can make a significant impact.
This year the Republic of Korea will host World Environment Day 2025, showcasing its commitment to tackling plastic pollution through a full life-cycle plastic strategy and circular economy approach. We can draw inspiration from their efforts and work towards creating a plastic-free future.
So, what can you do to get involved? You can start by organizing or participating in community events, adopting sustainable practices in your daily life, conserving water and energy, supporting sustainable food choices, and advocating for policy changes that promote sustainable practices.
As we come together to celebrate World Environment Day 2025, let us remember that every small action counts. By joining the #BeatPlasticPollution movement, we can inspire others to take action and create a better future for ourselves and future generations.
Let us unite against plastic pollution and work towards a more sustainable tomorrow. The time to act is now.
