A recent medical outreach in Michika Local Government, Adamawa State, has yielded impressive results, with a total of 226 surgeries conducted over a period of three days.
According to a statement by the State Chairman of Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, Dr Yunusa Dahiru, the outreach, which took place from December 10 to 12, 2024, provided comprehensive medical and surgical care, as well as health education, to the people of Michika and surrounding communities.
The medical team, comprising over 60 specialized senior medical doctors and 10 allied health professionals, including nurses, pharmacists, and technicians, worked tirelessly to provide medical services to the community.
The most common surgeries conducted were herniorraphy, while other major surgeries included thyroidectomy, total abdominal hysterectomy, myomectomy, cystectomy, and caesarian section.
In addition to the surgeries, the outreach also provided 2,500 general medical consultations and treatments, 188 digital X-ray examinations, with 16 presumptive cases of tuberculosis detected, and 128 ultrasound scans for proper diagnosis.
The statement further said over 1,000 lab tests were conducted, with those found to be HIV-positive connected with a team from ADSACA for treatment.
The outreach also revealed some alarming health trends in the community, including a high prevalence of peptic ulcer disease, with 45% of patients reporting symptoms.
It additionally said, over 70% of patients presented with symptoms of malaria, and a significant number of hypertensive patients were detected. Many female patients also presented with symptoms of pelvic inflammatory diseases (PID).
The medical outreach which was sponsored by Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri was conducted at the Michika General Hospital.
