Journalists in Taraba State have been urged to diligently disseminate information that will promote peace, unity, and harmonious coexistence in society.
The Resident Pastor of Supreme King’s Church, Roadblock Jalingo, Pastor Simon Danladi Atta, made this plea during a special Church service held on Sunday, 13th April 2025.
The special service was part of activities marking the Press Week of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Taraba State Council.
He referenced the book of Numbers, Chapter 13, and titled his message “Be a Publisher of Good News.” The pastor encouraged journalists to adhere to their professional ethics and fulfil their responsibilities as watchdogs for society.
The clergy cautioned against promoting negative news and urged journalists in the state to maintain objectivity in their reporting.
Furthermore, Pastor Simon Danladi Atta emphasized the importance of journalists as agenda-setters who should hold the government accountable for better public service.
Earlier during the service, the Chairman of the NUJ Taraba State Council, Comrade Mathew Eliud Jen, outlined the activities planned for Press Week, which also coincides with the seventieth anniversary of the union in Nigeria.
Jen noted that the Press Week aims to educate the public about the significance of journalism and the crucial role it plays in shaping society.
Additionally, the chairman explained that through their efforts, journalists seek to hold the government accountable and ensure better public service while keeping the public informed about current events.
Comrade Mathew Eliud Jen concluded by stating, “After seventy years, the union members have established themselves not only as disseminators of information but also as consultants on media-related issues within society.”
Notable attendees included Mrs Janet Audu, the chairperson of the state chapter of NAWOJ, and Mr Yeri Akila Yerima, the chairman of the Worldview Magazine chapel.
Others included Mr Jethro Yerga, the Assistant Secretary of the Nuj State Council; Mrs Victoria Roland Andekin, the council’s Auditor; and Mr Keke Moses, a News Editor at TSBS Jalingo, among others.
