2025: Inaugural NAWFA League Set To Kick-Off Monday In Jos, As Afunkoyo Babes FC Of Taraba Falls In Group ‘B’

The city of Jos is set to host history as the Northern Amateur Women Football Association (NAWFA) confirms April 21, 2025, as the new kickoff date for its inaugural league season. 

This is contained in a statement released by the NAWFA Media.

Initially scheduled for April 11, the competition was shifted to allow for better coordination and to avoid clashes with state engagements.

Speaking after the official draw ceremony held on Sunday evening, NAWFA Interim Chairman Moses Bako expressed excitement at the upcoming kickoff and hailed the Plateau State government for its support in hosting the maiden edition.

“We are excited to finally get this journey underway. The inaugural NAWFA League means more than just football—it’s about creating opportunities and shining a light on the future of women’s football in Northern Nigeria.

“We sincerely thank the Plateau State government for its generosity and commitment to hosting this historic first edition in Jos. Their support has been instrumental in getting us to this point,” Bako said.

Ten teams will participate in the competition, drawn into two groups of five. Group A features Jewel Queens of Gombe, Zango Queens of Kaduna, Plateau Queens, Bwaraune Babes of Adamawa, and Jaba Queens, while Group B includes Afunkoyo Babes of Taraba, Joe Kay, Blessed KAA, SIK Paragons, and Jazzy Damsels.

The opening day fixtures, Jos Township Stadium will see Jewel Queens face Plateau Queens at 8 a.m., followed by Afunkoyo Babes taking on SIK Paragons at 11 a.m., and Joe Kay battling Blessed KAA at 1 p.m.

Bako reiterated NAWFA’s commitment to excellence and grassroots development, saying: “This league is more than a competition, it is a platform to discover, nurture, and showcase the incredible female football talent scattered across the North. We are just getting started, and the future is bright.” The statement concluded.
