The Need For Environmental Hygiene In Maiduguri Metropolis

Environmental hygiene is fundamental to our health, and social well-being as well as preventing us from contracting various diseases caused by pollution. As humans, we are interconnected with our environment. Our built and natural environment is not just a place for us to live. A spotless environment leads to living in physical and mental health.
Environmental hygiene is the relationship between humans and their surroundings. This includes pollution, access to drinking clean water, shelter, and other infrastructural issues that impact public health.

Maiduguri, the Borno state capital is one of the states in Nigeria that has high improper waste disposal and poor environmental hygiene. Most of such waste can be reused and circled which would help in the prevention of high waste disposal.

Although the the Borno state government under the leadership of Professor Babagana Umara Zullum has created and implemented a policy of conducting monthly sanitation exercises across the metropolis, the Maiduguri community members are not Adhering strictly to the rules and thus few sanitize their surroundings. The government has also provided trash cans in various passages of the city but still, the public does not use these cans in the manner they are provided.

Unfortunately, the practices of dumping refuse in inappropriate places, not cutting grown-up grasses, and blockage of drainages with waste, among others are still rampant in the metropolis.

Consequently, the aforementioned factors can lead to mosquitoes growing as there is stagnant water, which later causes malaria as well as other communicable and non-communicable diseases.

Above all, the government should continue to provide trash cans in various areas, and they should enforce discipline in the citizens’ behavior, like paying fines when dumping rubbish in an inappropriate place. Also, People should take full responsibility for making sure our environment is clean and tidy. Abiding by the rules enforced on monthly sanitation requires collective efforts to achieve results.

In the dynamic landscape of Nigerian politics, where dedication and loyalty are often overshadowed by the pursuit of power, there emerges a figure whose unwavering commitment to the All Progressive Congress (APC) has become a beacon of inspiration.

So many individuals within the APC family, spanning across states in northern Nigeria and beyond, find themselves caught between two sides of the coin. This raises concerns about whether the ruling party in Nigeria truly possesses a mechanism for rewarding optimal loyalty and commitment. This article highlights some of these individuals, signaling to the ruling party that while the 2023 general elections may have been a year of battles and successes, the atmosphere in 2027 will be fraught with tension and power-plays.

Research conducted by the writer reveals that many dedicated sons and daughters of the APC, who contributed their best efforts, commitment, and support to the party’s success at all levels of the electoral process, have been overlooked for federal or state recognition. Consequently, they are being courted by strong opposition parties. In politics, one must heed the writing on the wall.

Kaduna, being the center of northern Nigeria, is a hub for national leaders. Many party stalwarts have faced animosity, leading some to defect to other parties. Notably, Mr. Wilson Iliya Yangye, a prominent figure in Jema’a local government council and a driving force behind the APC’s success, recently defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after being left to his destiny.

Similarly, in Adamawa State, former Senator Binta Garba, known for her active role in the APC, was offered a substantial sum to defect but staunchly refused due to her commitment to the party. However, despite her loyalty, Garba found herself unsupported in the end.

From the axis of Jigawa State, and in the intricate dance of politics, loyalty is often the currency of power. For Faruk Adamu Aliyu, a stalwart of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Jigawa State, his unwavering commitment to the party has been both a badge of honor and a source of frustration.

Faruk Adamu Aliyu, a name once synonymous with the relentless pursuit of APC’s success in Jigawa and beyond, finds himself at a crossroads. Despite his tireless efforts and dedication to the party’s cause, he stands unrecognized and sidelined by the current administration. His aspirations, once buoyed by promises of recognition and reward, now lie in tatters, casting a shadow over the party’s integrity and commitment to its own.

As Faruk Adamu Aliyu’s story reverberates through the corridors of power, it serves as a sobering reminder of the delicate balance between loyalty and neglect in politics. As Nigeria hurtles towards the 2027 general elections, the APC would do well to heed this cautionary tale. For every Faruk Adamu Aliyu left behind, there are countless others whose loyalty hangs in the balance. The future of the party depends not only on its ability to secure victory at the polls but also on its commitment to nurturing and empowering its grassroots supporters.

In the crucible of Nigerian politics, loyalty is a precious commodity, one that must be cherished and reciprocated if a party is to thrive. As the APC charts its course forward, it must remember the lesson of Faruk Adamu Aliyu: neglect your own at your own peril.

His unwavering support for the party’s leadership, tireless efforts in strengthening its structures, and pivotal role in securing victories during critical elections have earned him the respect and admiration of fellow party members and constituents alike.

In the tumultuous aftermath of the 2023 general elections, where the stakes were high and the challenges daunting, A. A. Zaura stood firm in his allegiance to APC, despite facing personal setbacks. His bid for a senatorial seat in Kano Central may not have materialized, but his resilience in the face of adversity serves as a testament to his unwavering commitment to the party’s ideals.

Despite his invaluable contributions to APC’s success, A. A. Zaura finds himself overlooked when it comes to federal appointments or positions of influence. This glaring omission raises pertinent questions about the party’s mechanisms for rewarding loyalty and dedication. As calls for his defection to opposing parties grow louder, A. A. Zaura remains steadfast in his allegiance to APC, demonstrating a rare brand of loyalty that transcends personal ambition.

It is imperative for the leadership of APC, particularly at the federal level, to recognize and appreciate the selfless sacrifices of individuals like A. A. Zaura. His continued support for the party, even in the face of adversity, serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of valuing loyalty and commitment within the political sphere.

As Nigeria looks towards a future shaped by the leadership of individuals like Bola Ahmed Tinubu, it is incumbent upon the party’s stalwarts to heed the call for recognition and reward those who have stood by its side through thick and thin. A. A. Zaura’s story is not just one of personal resilience, but a reflection of the enduring spirit of dedication that defines APC’s journey towards a brighter tomorrow. It is time for his contributions to be acknowledged and celebrated, lest the party risk losing the very essence of its core values.

Investigations reveal that all political parties are vying for A. A. Zaura, particularly amid rumors of forming a mega party to challenge the ruling party in 2027. It is speculated that figures such as Atiku, Obi, and Elrufai are gearing up to enlist talented youth and influential politicians who feel neglected by the APC. Sources have disclosed numerous attempts to court Zaura, but his reluctance may stem from his close relationship with President Bola Tinubu.

However, in the system of politics, anything is possible, especially when an individual’s loyalty and efforts are disregarded, and they are excluded from the decision-making process.

A glimpse into the life of former Police Minister, Mallam Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, reveals him as a beacon of unwavering loyalty amidst political challenges. As a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nigeria’s ruling party, Dingyadi dedicated himself wholeheartedly to advancing its agenda. His commitment was boundless, evident in his investment of time, energy, and resources to support the party’s objectives.

Despite his steadfast loyalty and significant contributions, Dingyadi finds himself overlooked and marginalized by the current administration. The very party he fervently supported has failed to acknowledge his dedication, leaving him feeling neglected and sidelined.

In the midst of this political upheaval, Dingyadi faces relentless pressure from formidable opposition parties seeking to lure him away from the APC. Day in and day out, they visit him, attempting to sway his allegiance and enlist him in their cause. However, despite the allure of alternative options, Dingyadi remains resolute in his commitment to the APC, steadfastly refusing to yield to the enticements of the opposition.

Dingyadi’s narrative epitomizes resilience, integrity, and unwavering loyalty. Despite encountering neglect and abandonment, he remains faithful to the party he believes in, steadfastly upholding his principles even in adversity. As Nigeria’s political landscape undergoes transformation, Dingyadi’s unwavering commitment serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring strength of loyalty amidst turbulent times.

It is with disappointment that we address the baseless accusations propagated by Taraba News on behalf of anonymous individuals, targeting Hon. (Dr.) Aminu Jauro Hassan, the Executive Chairman of Jalingo Local Government Council, alleges marginalization. While initially inclined to dismiss such unfounded claims, it is imperative to set the record straight.

In the pursuit of political relevance, it is paramount to uphold the truth over a facade of falsehoods. Hon. (Dr.) Aminu Jauro Hassan has consistently demonstrated integrity and transparency in his role as the Executive Chairman of the Jalingo Local Government Council.

Any insinuation of religious bias against him is not only erroneous but also a gross misrepresentation of Dr. Jauro Hassan’s character. He firmly believes in the primacy of humanity over religious affiliation, emphasizing the unity of all people regardless of their faith.

The assertion of Christian marginalization is unfounded and begs the question: can there be varying degrees of Christianity among believers? Contrary to these claims, numerous Christians have been appointed under Dr. Jauro Hassan’s leadership, reflecting his commitment to inclusivity and diversity.

It is regrettable that instead of celebrating the appointments of fellow Christians, some individuals, perhaps driven by personal agendas, have chosen to fuel a smear campaign to advance their interests.

Dr. Jauro remains steadfast in his dedication to the vision of His Excellency, Dr. Agbu Kefas, in fostering a cohesive Taraba devoid of discrimination based on religion, ethnicity, or creed. 

He continues to advocate for unity and cooperation among all residents, reaffirming his unwavering commitment to the principles of fairness and equality for all.

Battling Banditry: If You Think Dr Gumi’s The Problem You Have a Problem

Many critics of Gumi can’t see the wood for the trees, hence their growing call to stifle and limit his liberty, beliefs and free speech.

To be sure, Gumi isn’t a bandit neither is he a bandits’ backer. How could he be when it’s haram! Gumi’s forays into bandits den were restricted to calling them to lay down their arms, retrace their steps, embrace God, and repent.

Indeed his views on banditry (hiraaba) as I hear him say, is informed by the provisions of Qur’an 4: 33-34. In his tafsirs, at every opportunity, Gumi rightly describes and denounces hiraaba as a crime against the state worthy of the prescribed hadd – capital punishment.

But we all know what is happening in the Northwest and other affected states is a little bit more complex than the hiraaba as we know it.

The Fulanis, major ‘culprits’ in this banditry, have suffered untold injustices in the hands of the state, traditional institutions and the citizens. I know this, I saw it since I was barely 11. For instance, a minor encroachment on a farm will cost the life or limb of the Fulani herder, a hefty fine in court or big bribe and extortion in the hands of police. Their grazing lands were usurped and giving to rich farmers. These injustices have continued unabated to date. All this has turned them into amoral, nihilistic insurgents. Perhaps, delusional jihadists!

The historical Injustices served on the Fulanis are so notorious that they joke about it and mock the Fulanis. I have a personal anecdote to buttress this:
A fortnight ago, at a park close to Apo roundabout in Abuja, I listened to a crude raillery between a Fulani and a Hausa, who speaks Sakkwatanci—Western Hausa dialect. The Hausaman was telling the Fulani that if given the chance, he would do what the “hukuma” (security agents) “Sarki” (traditional rulers) and “sarkin fawa” (butchers) do to him. By this he meant cheating the Fulani is okay. I chipped in to be sure what he meant. He said he’ll usurped anything and everything the Fulani has. And I retorted by saying that’s why “we kidnap and kill you too” —jokingly of course. I’m Fulani too.

The Injustice of the state is its failure to provide security for the lives and livestock of the Fulanis —rustlers have rustled their cattle, armed robbers rob them and murder them. The systemic corruption in the police and judiciary means that the Fulanis can’t get justice when the ‘Sarki’ or ‘Sarkin Fawa’ cheat them. The impunity ensures that the state and citizens dehumanise the Fulanis: their cattle kill for food; their kind kill for fun! The Fulanis are left to their own devices and ordinary Nigerians are the worse for it.
Of course, there are other underlining causes of this banditry like unemployment, poverty, illiteracy, governors, civil wars in neighbouring nations, external conspiracies, destruction of Libya etc.

Thus, it’s easy to see that something beyond bombs and bullets is needed. The Nigerian armed forces have been bombing and shooting at banditry for over a decade now but they’re unable to stop the abductions, at least, the kind we just saw at Kuriga and many other places.

Worse, sometimes it results in catastrophic outcomes like Tudun Biri where about 120 innocent citizens, mostly children, were wasted erroneously by military drones.

More, the cost of the war isn’t limited to unintentional occasional killings of civilians, it includes lives and limbs of dozens of servicemen, downed air force jets, military vehicles and tonnes of Naira notes.
Dr Gumi has put his head over the parapet so as to reduce these costs. His perspective is by no means justificatory or exculpatory.

He might not be an epitome of oratory but his prescription, even if in provocative language, is worth looking at: fight corruption, strengthen the state –Nigeria is a weak state, if state is about monopoly of legitimate use of force, protection of citizens and provision of services like healthcare, education etc, talk to the Fulanis, educate them—teach them “high self-control,” integrate them into the mainstream society, provide jobs for them — farming can consume all of them— and alleviate their extreme poverty.

I must add that Tinubu’s Pulaku Initiative would help if it’s not corrupted. Better spending of security votes by governors would help too.
Lastly, the President should be open-minded and lend listening ear to dissenting voices including Gumi’s. For Dr Gumi’s prescription is part of the solution and if you think it’s the problem, Wallahi you have a problem.
