NULGE Elections: Group Warns Against Imposition, Alleges Involvement Of Govt. Officials In Taraba

The leadership of the Concerned Citizens of Taraba, in Taraba state, has expressed concern over the alleged refusal of the state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, to embark on the process of electing a new Chairman for the union.

The group who could not fathom why the union has continued to drag its feet on the delegate conference, made their position known on Thursday in a statement issued to newsmen in Jalingo.

Signed by its Coordinator, Abdullahi Ishaya Dominic said the delay in bringing on board new leadership had begun to negatively affect the union.

Wondering why the exercise which ought to take place on September 8th has constantly been postponed, the group alleged that plans to hijack the process by some overzealous government functionaries.

The group also alleged that some top government functionaries have perfected plans to hijack the process by imposing unpopular leadership on the union,

They stressed the need for Governor Agbu Kefas to wade in by calling such persons to order to avert crisis and vowed to resist any attempt to impose a leadership on the union.

The group further reiterated readiness to ensure the emergence of credible leaders that will salvage the union and urged the governor to as a matter of urgency accord the union the desired support to hold its delegate conference to elect a new Exco that will oversee the affairs of the union in the state.

“The state government under the leadership of Dr. Agbu Kefas, allows all unions the opportunity to do their things in their ways. So we are calling on him to help us in ensuring that no individual under whatever guise hijacks the process or attempts to subvert the will of the union’s members,” the statement added.

Aligning their weights to that of the concerned group, some of the union members who bared their minds to our reporter, vowed to tread extra legitimate miles to frustrate those planning to hijack the process.

They, however, urged those assigned with the rqzesponsibility of conducting fresh elections, to as a matter of urgency commence the process.

The said delegate conference which ought to have been held early this month, was necessitated following the appointment of its former State Chairman, Noseh Luka, as a Commissioner by Governor Agbu Kefas.

While commending the Rivers Hoopers players, coaches, and management for their exemplary performance; he noted that this achievement will undoubtedly inspire the next generation of Nigerian basketball stars and fuel the continued development of the sport in Nigeria.

Rivers Hoopers defeated APR 78-71 to clinch BAL Playoffs qualification over the weekend in Dakar, Senegal.

SWAN Ex-DP, Moyoyo Advocates For Commitment To Policies, Programs

The former National Deputy President of SWAN, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Moyoyo has called on the current national executive under the leadership of Mr. Isaiah Benjamin to remain committed to their policies and programs.

He made the call during the 2024 full council meeting of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) held recently in Kano State,

Sadiq Moyoyo, who is also the Dallatu of Bantaje Chiefdom in Taraba State, urged President Benjamin to urgently restore the association’s past glory and good name in Nigeria and abroad. 

He warned the leadership to avoid any acts that could cause division within the association.

He admitted that the offenses committed by the past leadership would have caused serious division within the Exco and should have led to the impeachment of the then President, Mr. Honour Sirawoo. 

He praised the patience and tolerance of the past Exco members in managing the issue until the last day.

Furthermore, he criticized the reasons advanced by the SWANECO as a basis to disqualify contestants for various positions during the last delegates Congress as flimsy and acts of persecution. 

Additionally, he called on the current Exco led by President Isaiah Benjamin to investigate and punish any member found wanting, regardless of their status.

Moyoyo commended the mature manner in which President Isaiah Benjamin manages the issues concerning the association and urged members across Nigeria to give him maximum support to enable him to excel. 

However, during an interview with journalists, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Moyoyo, the former Deputy President of SWAN, expressed his appreciation for the commitment of Governor Agbu Kefas Ph.D in restoring sporting activities and uplifting the youth across Taraba State.

Moyoyo described the Governor as a sports enthusiast who has been investing in sports and the youth even before he became a Governor. 

He further commended the governor for sponsoring a unity football championship comprising all the local governments in southern Taraba known as the “KEFAS CUP” saying that it would further solidify the existing rapport amongst them.

He commended the Taraba State Commissioner of Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Joseph Joshua, and called for synergy between the ministry, and SWAN in Taraba State, as well as appealed to the people of the State to continue praying for Dr. Agbu Kefas’s administration to enable his Moving Forward Agenda to be achieved.

The Dallatun Bantaje praised the Kano chapter of SWAN, under the chairmanship of Zahraddeen Saleh, for hosting the 34 states that honoured the Full Council meeting and prayed to God to reward them.

Finally, the veteran sports journalist, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Moyoyo charged his colleagues to focus on reporting rural sports News.

SWAN National Ex-officio, Malikawa Charges State Chapters On Initiatives

Alhaji Railwanu Malikawa Garu, the National Ex-officio in charge of North-West, urged state chairmen of the association to promote sports competitions in their respective states for the development of grassroots sports in Nigeria.

He made the plea during the 2024 Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Full Council meeting held at the Global Luxury Hotel in Kano recently.

Malikawa, who is also the Sarkin Malikawa Garu in the Bichi Emirate Council of Kano State, further advised state chapters to avoid depending solely on state governments for organizing sporting activities. 

He commended SWAN President Mr. Isiah Benjamin and the National Executive Council (NEC) for their dedication and steadfastness in uplifting the association. 

Malikawa also expressed his appreciation for the members of the Full Council, made up of state Chairmen and Secretaries, as well as other national officials, for exhibiting sportsmanship and demonstrating their commitment to SWAN’s development in the country.

He noted that the attendance of 34 states of the federation, including the FCT, at the Full Council meeting was a testament to the Isiah Benjamin-led administration’s stability. 

Malikawa who was also the Chairman of local organizing committee, emphasized that, as stakeholders, they would not sit idly by and watch a few individuals ruin a reputable association like SWAN, which was established in 1952.

Additionally, Alhaji Railwanu Malikawa Garu said that Kano SWAN is planning to organize a workshop for members of the Full Council to improve their sports writing skills. 

He also advocated for the revival of the state’s Festival, as it was previously done, and thanked stakeholders and other partners for contributing to the success of the event.

Recall that the event was organized by the SWAN Kano State chapter under the leadership of Mr. Zahraddeen Saleh where some prominent Nigerians were conferred with an award for their contributions to sports development in Nigeria including the Minister of Sports Development and Alhaji Isiyaku Umar Tofa (OON), amongst others.
