Speaker of Taraba State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. John Kizito Bonzena, JP has applauded the outgoing members of the 9th Assembly for tremendous achievements, just as he called on the incoming members of the 10th Assembly to emulate their predecessors to ensure unity of purpose and progress of the State.

The Speaker made the assertions on Wednesday, 31st  May 2023 in his Valedictory speech, following a proclamation for dissolution of the House of Assembly by the State Governor, Dr. Kefas Agbu.

According to the Speaker, because of the unity of purpose by the members of the 9th Assembly, they were able to pass into law over 40 bills, including several motions/resolutions.

He further stated that it was on record that during the more than 726 Legislative days, the State House of Assembly experienced rancor-free deliberations because the Honourable Members stayed together as a family.

Bonzena stressed that “as a family for four years without any substantial quarrel or misunderstanding, is in itself an achievement.”

“The four years journey of the 9th Assembly can be said to be successful. This is despite some occasional unpleasant happenings in our relationship with other Arms of government.

“On the whole, Honourable Members have continued to demonstrate their maturity, patience, and tolerance in the performance of their constitutional roles of lawmaking, representation, and oversight; this is highly commendable.

“During the period under review, this Honourable House processed over 40 Bills and Executive Orders for passage and assent by His Excellency, the Executive Governor.

“These Bills and Orders which are being implemented to facilitate governance and bring in dividends of democracy to the people are in the various socio-economic and political aspects of our endeavors,” he explained.

The Speaker also paid glowing tribute to his predecessors and the Honourable Members who would not be part of the 10th Assembly, adding “I am, however, saddened by the fact that only a handful of us will be returning as we anxiously await the inauguration of the 10th Assembly in Taraba State.”

Thereafter, the Honourable Members spoke passionately about their experiences in the House of Assembly over the years, advising the incoming members of the 10th Assembly to work assiduously as a team and to regard the other Arms of government as partners in progress, and not to engage in grandstanding and brickbats.

The House of Assembly was adjourned to reconvene on Friday, 2nd June 2023 for the inauguration of the 10th Assembly and the election of new leadership.

The Chairman of Kurmi Local Government Council, Moses Maihankali advised in an interview in Jalingo.

He said the reconciliation process is ongoing to bring the two warring parties together to foster permanent peace and stability in the community.

Maihankali stated that his administration is committed to supporting Governor Agbu Kefes’s five-point agenda to ensure the peace and security of the citizens.

The chairman said that even though he inherited the long-standing communal crises, he assured that he would explore all necessary strategies to establish lasting peace and stability between the two tribes.

He revealed that he had already held separate reconciliatory meetings with the Chamba Dakka and the Ichen communities to discuss the need to reconcile the two ethnic groups for peace and unity.

Moses Maihankali explained that these discussions have yielded positive results and plans are underway to invite the groups to Baissa to bring both parties together for reconciliation.

This will be followed by warm receptions and celebrations before facilitating their official relocation to the Bissaula community for the final settlement in their homes.

He noted that following the displacement of people from the community, bandits took advantage of the area to carry out nefarious activities, but said the situation had been brought under control.

The chairman called on the warring residents to forgive one another and forget the past to complement Governor Agbu Kefes’s peace initiative and allow development to thrive.

It should be recalled that the prolonged crises in Bissaula, which displaced the entire community for about three years, started as a result of the chieftaincy tussle between Ichen and the Chamba Dakka.
