The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and anti graft agencies have enforced the circulation of new naira notes on commercial banks and their agents in Bauchi State.

The agencies comprising Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC)

Speaking during the monitoring exercise of the commercial Banks on Wednesday, Dr Elizabeth Kwaghe, Deputy Director Currency Operations CBN, said they are in the Banks to monitor and ensure adequate circulation of new naira currency.

She explained that they check records of disbursement of the new notes by the Banks and agents and the stocking of the Automated Teller Machines ATMs with the new currency in the state.

She said CBN in collaboration with EFCC and ICPC embarked on monitoring of banks to ensure implementation of guidelines on disbursement of new naira notes to customers.

“To ensure banks dispense new notes via Automated Teller Machines (ATM) and agents to complement over-the-counter transactions and increase the circulation of the redesigned notes,” she said.

She expressed dismay with some banks in the state for not complying with the disbursement of the new naira notes allocated to them by CBN.

“We will not tolerate hoarding the new naira notes or else severe sanctions will be taken against any bank hoarding the new currency notes.

“Any commercial bank which failed to collect their allocations of the new currency notes or flout the directives on their distribution will be sanctioned.

“CBN has enough new Naira notes given to Commercial Banks that will take care of the demands of customers,” Kwaghe said.

Kwaghe expressed dismay that in some banks only one or two ATMs dispensed the new currency notes, thus forcing customers to be on a long queue.

She urged customers to make good use of the opportunity of extending the deposit deadline to Feb. 10 to swap their old N1,000, N500 and N200 notes.

Residents of Jalingo in Taraba State, have commended the judiciary over its ruling on the extension of the validity of old naira notes.

Those who spoke to our reporter in the state capital also appreciated the federal government and the Central Bank of Nigeria for complying with the court judgment.

Our Correspondent who monitored some ATM points of various commercial banks within Jalingo reported that many people were excited after withdrawing the amount they wanted from an ATM at one of the commercial banks along Hamman Ruwa way in Jalingo.

Most of the ATM points he visited were dispensing cash to customers and the queue had reduced drastically as confirmed by Hasana W. Yohana, Sister Ada, and Douglas Jonah who patronized the banks.

They also expressed hope that the incoming administration of Sen. Bola Ahmed Tinubu will provide more dividends of democracy to Nigerians and make the nation a better place to live in.

However, some water vendors “known as Mai rule”, mobile tailors known as “patchers”, and fruit sellers all in an interview described the current situation as much appreciable as now they are getting cash from customers.

Recalled that before the supreme court judgment, many Nigerians including the people of Taraba State lamented the ripple effect of the cash crunch on their businesses and day-to-day activities.

Also recalled that the supreme court had on Friday the 3rd March 2023 extended the validity of old two hundred, five hundred, and one thousand naira notes till 31st December 2023.

Meanwhile, there is no doubt that the directive by the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele that the banks should comply with the court’s order is yielding a positive result in making life easier for Nigerians.

It is, however, worth mentioning that the judiciary is proving to Nigerians that it remains the last hope of the common man.
