CSED: 80 Pupils Participate In Basic Badminton Training In Taraba

A three-day basic badminton training for Game masters, game mistresses, and secondary school pupils has rounded up in Jalingo, the Taraba state capital with a call on young talents to combine education with sports to enable them to excel in the sporting world.

The state Director of the Sports Council, George Shitta threw the challenge during the closing ceremony which took place at the Jolly Nyame Indoor sports hall on Thursday.

Eighty students from eighteen various secondary schools of both federal, state, and private within the state capital participated in the training with twenty-four game masters and game mistresses, as well as six instructors.

Shitta told sports journalists that the training was powered by a non-governmental organization, Community Sports and Educational Development Initiative (CSED) in conjunction with Taraba Badminton.

He said it was aimed at equipping the young talents with basic knowledge of the game for them to build on, to enable them to become national and international players like the former Africa number one badminton player who is from Taraba State and also participated in the event, Jimkan Ephraim.

The Director also appreciated the gesture by the CSED for selecting Taraba as one of the states that will benefit from its project for reintroducing netball which will take place soon.

George Shitta further revealed the CSED has donated 60 rackets, 18 tubes of shuttlecocks, and 17 nets where each school goes with a 2 set of two rackets (4 inside) to be used for doubles mix and doubles singles.

He explained that the remaining 6 rackets were given to the Director of Sports, state ministry for Basic and secondary education for him to also continue praying the game and not forget badminton.

Shitta, however, promised to complement the gesture by the CSED by organizing an inter-school badminton tournament for the schools that participated in the training where prizes would be won.

In an interview, the Director of Sports, Taraba state ministry for Basic and secondary education, Mr. Affos Musa Emmanuel promised to lias with the Director of Sports Council, George Shitta to get some coaches to go around with them to various schools that participated in the training for them to erect badminton cut to encourage them.

Some of the pupils who participated in the training, were Ruth Andoor (13 years old) from Government Technical Training School (GTTS) Jalingo, Emmanuel George Shitta (11 years old) from Destiny Success Academy, and Anna Sylvester Jabire (15 years old) from Raddar Metropolitan School Jalingo all affirmed that they have gained more knowledge of the game.

Also, Victoria Edoche (13 years old) from Our Lady of Consolation, Telltuly Calib Jibril (13 years old), and Ayaungwa Wisdom (13 years old) from H. Heritage Academy described the training as impactful and promised to be committed and focus on the game unlike before.

However, one of the instructors, Emmanuel Sambo said the training will go a long way in encouraging the young talents to become champions in badminton, and urged the Taraba State government to pay attention to the sports sector to improve its internal revenue generation.

The event closed with the presentation of rackets, tubes of shuttlecocks, nets, and group photographs.

SWAN: Gombe Elects New Excos, Chairman Echoes Support For Members

Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Gombe State Council on Tuesday, 21st May 2024 elected new executive members through consensus to lead the association for the next three years.

During the event, the National President of the association, Mr. Isaiah Benjamin, represented by the Vice President of North East Zone, Comrade Ahmed Kagana Amshi, highlighted the association’s commitment to innovation and standardization of operations across states.

Mr. Benjamin emphasized the achievements made by SWAN under the leadership of the current NEC, focusing on professionalism and adherence to statutory provisions. 

He mentioned recent improvements to the association’s website and registration procedures to enhance membership regulations and operational efficiency.

Addressing the Gombe State Government, Mr. Benjamin expressed anticipation for SWAN’s active presence in the state and requested permission to organize national events such as Full Council Meetings or NEC meetings to strengthen the association’s footprint in the state.

The outgoing chairman, Halilu Mohammed Teli, praised the peaceful conduct of the election and thanked the NUJ leadership under Comrade Sa’idu Malala and government officials especially the DG Press Affairs, Government House, Gombe, Alhaji Isma’ila Uba Misilli, SSA on Media to Governor Inuwa Yahaya, Suleiman Musa Arzu.

He also appreciated supporters for standing by SWAN during attempts to disrupt the association’s activities.

Malala acknowledged the support of the former Gombe State Commissioner of Youth Empowerment, Malam Farouk Yarma for sponsoring one of their Zonal meeting and Merit Awards which took place in Gombe as well as other financial and moral support.

The outgoing chairman further thanked Governor Inuwa Yahaya for his relentless support both financially and materially to the association, citing the disbursement of rice palliative to members.

Mr. Teli emphasized the unity and solidarity within SWAN Gombe and encouraged the incoming leadership to uphold the legacy of the association with dedication and commitment. 

He highlighted challenges faced by SWAN Gombe, including limited funding and support from sports authorities, and called for stronger partnerships with stakeholders to enhance sports development in the state.

The State Commissioner of Youth and Sports Development, Adamu Inuwa Pantami represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Modi Shelpidi, assured continued collaboration with SWAN members during the ministry’s events.

Goodwill messages were delivered by various stakeholders, including the State Football Association, Mr. Philibus Yakubu Sarma, the Director General of Media and Publicity to Governor Inuwa, Alh. Isma’il Uba Misilli who was represented by the SSA Media Suleiman Musa Arzu.

Others are the NUJ Chairman of Gombe State Council who was represented by his secretary, Alhaji Danjuma Kala.

Overall, the election and transition of leadership in SWAN Gombe were successful, reflecting a commitment to professionalism, unity, and the promotion of sports journalism in the state.

In his acceptance speech, the newly elected chairman, Mr. Mark Malele commended members for the confidence reposed in him and assured that SWAN Gombe under his leadership will continue to record positive development and growth.

He echoes more support for the association, especially from the Government and partners in the  State.

Gov Fintiri Flags Off Construction Of Ultra-modern Int’l Sports Complex In Yola

In line with his commitment to transforming the sports sector, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State has flagged off construction and completion of the first phase of abandoned Ultra-modern International Sports Complex in Yola.

The project conceived with the best of intention was abandoned by the successive administrations in the state and because of its importance to youths development, informed the basis for its completion by the Fintiri administration.

In his remarks at the event, held in the premises of the stadium complex along Yola- Numan road on Tuesday, Governor Fintiri said the sports complex will boost sporting activities and provide a right ground to harness the talent of youths in the state.

He added that the era of going to the neighboring states to play games by Adamawa sports contingents is over as the state will be hosting sports men and women from across the country when the project is completed.

The Governor said: “As government, we have dimensioned the significance of this project to our teaming youths especially our enthusiastic sports men and women and importantly to the investment climate in the state and came to a conclusion that the value it brings to the table far outweighs any pecuniary consideration.


“Globally, sport has come to play a critical role in human activities. It has transcended the bounds of recreation as we use to know it. It is now a therapeutic activity for both the young and the old. It puts the right icing on the cake of a healthy lifestyle.

“Above all it has now been elevated to a multi-fortune business industry where staggering returns are made on investment. We can’t therefore maximize the benefit that comes with the emerging status of sports without providing the right facility to promote it. The stadium complex is our modest initial investment in this enterprise”.

Governor Fintiri noted that sports is indeed a multifortune industry and its opportunities are boundless, calling on business communities to invest in it, since the government has provided the necessary enablers.

The State Commissioner of Youths and Sports, Barrister Wali Yakubu said the project which costs N4.7bn has a fifteen months timeframe, asking the contractor to ensure the work is executed according to specification.

The representative of the contracting firm, Aron Nigeria Limted, thanked Governor Fintiri for giving attention to what he described as a legacy project and assured its completion within the timeframe.

The Coach of Super Falcons of Nigeria, Mr Justine Madugu thanked Governor Fintiri for flagging off the project, saying its impact will cover Nigeria and beyond, as well as empower youths and women.

While commending the Rivers Hoopers players, coaches, and management for their exemplary performance; he noted that this achievement will undoubtedly inspire the next generation of Nigerian basketball stars and fuel the continued development of the sport in Nigeria.

Rivers Hoopers defeated APR 78-71 to clinch BAL Playoffs qualification over the weekend in Dakar, Senegal.
