NPFL: Gombe United Shares The Spoil With Kwara United In Their League Season Opener

The Savannah Scorpions today began their 2023 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season with a goalless draw against Kwara United in their adopted home ground – Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan, Oyo state.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Media Officer, Halilu Mohammed Teli.

Gombe United dominated proceedings in the first half with the first goal on target coming from Sama’ila Bello’s cross which was denied entry by goalkeeper Adewale Adeyinka in the 4′ minute of the match.

And in the 15′ he was again forced to parry out Samuel Ogunjimi’s fierce long-range effort with the resultant corner kick poorly headed by Gimba Ajiji.

Gombe United was unlucky not to register a goal in the first half as they missed pockets of goal chances.

The hosts came back into the second half more rejuvenated as they launched an attack and counterattacks but the visitors ‘ defensive line was able to contain threats with goalkeeper Itodo Akor Christian forced to make a series of saves to denied the hosts a break through.

The Savannah Scorpions gaffer expressed gratitude to God for the victory and applauded his lads for their resilience in the game.

” I must commend my boys for their performance. You know every season ‘s league is very difficult, it takes some matches for the team to find their rhythm. I’m very happy with the result”.

“Ordinarily if you look at my team, we’ve exit of some players and Itodo too wanted to move but we were able to convince him to stay because of his experience, and today he was outstanding.”

Aliyu Zubairu explained that he has turned his attention to their next mid-week home fixture.

” Our focus now is the mid-week fixture at home to visiting Remo Stars. We’re taking every match seriously as will go back God willing to prepare for the encounter.”

He commended the match officials for the way and manner they handled the game, saying that such fair officiating would continue our league’s growth.

Irish-Born Nigerian Defender Nwubani Joins  Bundesliga Club VfL Bochum

In a move that has excited soccer fans across Nigeria and Ireland, former Flying Eagles center-back Osinachi Keleb Nwubani has signed with German Bundesliga club VfL Bochum. 

The 21-year-old defender penned a 2-year contract with the option for an additional 1-year extension on April 12th, 2024.

Nwubani, who was born in Ireland to Nigerian parents, has long been regarded as one of the brightest young prospects in African football. 

After impressing with the Flying Eagles, Nigeria’s U-20 national team, Nwubani has now earned the opportunity to showcase his talents on the big stage of the Bundesliga.

“I’m thrilled to be joining a historic club like VfL Bochum,” Nwubani said in his first interview as a Bochum player. “This is a tremendous opportunity for me, and I’m eager to give my absolute best and help the team achieve success.”

The 6ft 3 versatile defender, who can play both in the center of defense and as a full-back, will now have the chance to represent either Nigeria or the Republic of Ireland at the senior international level. 

Both national teams have been monitoring his progress closely, and his decision on which country to pledge his allegiance to will be highly anticipated.

As Nwubani embarks on this new chapter in his career, Nigerian fans will be eagerly hoping that he provides answers to Super Eagles’ defensive problems.
