Camel meat is known for its nutritional and dynamic role in providing superfluous healthy standards in humans, keeping some parts of the body resistant to diseases that may cause harm or abruptly weaken the body. Camel Meat sale is considered a profitable business in some markets across the Sub-Saharan regions where it is mostly used for medical reasons.
The average meat consumption is on the increase annually and marketers’ verdict access to deliver numerous camels from the nearest countries with a concomitant border to Nigeria, such as Niger Republic, Chad, and Cameroon.
The Kasuwar Shanu in Maiduguri has become a major means of livelihood for thousands of people and regular means of generating revenue for the Government. It is sustainably protective and accepted by the people, particularly in Borno State where the camel meat business is being upheld like other related butchery marketing.
From the observed crowd around the Kasuwar Shanu Market Maiduguri, which is the prevalent domicile for selling camel meat, the Market appears busy while diverse people come for business activities. However, there are branches of camel meat sellers, areas of reservations of the slaughtered camels, wholesalers’ posts, and stores that are kept and arranged for dissemination of the meat across the State.
Reports gathered revealed that camel meat sellers are categorized into various parts, some are carrying out the business within the market while others serve as street hawkers meant to purchase meat parts and sell them around the city.
Kasuwar Shanu is quite peaceful, businesses are moving smoothly despite some life-related challenges in the stock exchange and necessary demands.
In an interview, Yakubu Muhammad Gumsu, Chairman of camel meat hawkers disclosed to “The Citizen Reports” that the number of members under his watch exceeds 200. while lamenting how they run the business with fragmentary challenges of lack of capital due to global inflation and impediment in poor amenities.
He, in addition, revealed that they needed the government’s intervention by giving them ample support that will elevate their business, safeguard economic breakdown and develop a healthier society.
Also, Mallam Bahna, who is an active member camel meat street hawker association, stated that the business is money-making well, but sometimes faces challenges of derisory development after years of carrying out the business, emphasizing that they suffered from delivering the camel meat to most needy places around the city, which is attributed to lack of working materials like wheel-barrow.
He, nevertheless, called on the State government to assist them with necessary facilities that will promote the business and reduce the number of unemployed youths in Maiduguri and its environs.
Similarly, Alhaji Abubakar Guza, the Chairman of Kasuwar Shanu narrated to “The Citizen Reports” the background history of the Kasuwar Shanu Market, said: “The market was first founded sixty years back, where the butchery services are taking placing.” TCR inquired, “How is the camel business going here in Borno state?” He told TCR that, “Camel meat business is among the most important businesses running in the market, people are numerously coming to buy and the market is running stable.”
“From the sixty years of the market’s existence, when did the camel meat business begin?” The Citizen Reports asked, and he answered that “I witnessed the beginning of the business about forty years ago”
The Chairman also highlighted to The Citizen Reports that the camel meat business is optionally not a regular business due to some circumstances met by the sellers as they considered the level of demands and estimated the outcome of the profit.
Also, one consumer of camel meat told The Citizen Reports that he has been patronizing the market for seven years ago and this is due to the hygienic nature of the meat in circulation.
He explained that he developed an interest in camel meat against others because the meat is free from causing all forms of suspected ill.
Also, The Citizen Reports met with Dr Musa Zakariah, a lecturer with the Department of Veterinary Medicine, University of Maiduguri, who asserted that camel meat has been known to improve the digestive and nervous systems, and it has unique properties such as aroma and flavour.
He added that despite all the nutritional and health benefits, camel meat is yet to get market acceptability which could be due lack of awareness about the importance of the meat.
Mr Musa said there is a need for the enlightenment of the general public by animal health workers and nutritionists so that maximum benefit can be derived from camel meat.
However, despite the economic situation, there are rapid demands for camel meat from buyers around Borno State, but the decayed resistance in the business from finding it hard to earn capital for the purchasing of camel meat, has, undoubtedly, affected the business activities of the meat in Maiduguri.
The Associate Committee of camel meat sellers in their separate remarks called on the Borno State Government on giving them a helping hand to expand the business to make the camel meat available across the State.
