Bauchi Institute Graduates First Set Of Students On Prevention Of Bullying In Schools

The Attah Sisters Helping Hands Foundation (ASHHF) Institute of Peace Building Bauchi has graduated 15 first set of students on peace building and curbing bullying in schools in the state.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony recently, the Proprietor of the Institute, Mrs Comfort Attah said 15 first sets of the students were vigorously taught on curbing bullying in schools and peace building.

She noted It’s a staggering statistic that explained many ways bullying can affect students’ wellbeing, children often suffer from poor performance in school, sleep issues, anxiety, and depression.

“The students doing the bullying they’re at a much higher risk for a whole host of issues that could extend into adulthood, ranging from violent behavior to substance abuse,” she said.

According to her, the main objective of the training is to combat bullying in our schools and communities, noting that bullying is widely referred to as harassment, these acts are so rampant that Nigeria government enacted a law on violence against a person’s prohibition act.

“The students learned much on Teaching kindness and empathy, creating opportunities for connection, stressing that small behaviors can often signal the beginning patterns of bullying

“As well as Using drama, literature, and the visual arts as a vehicle for conversation, educators can help students understand the negative impact of bullying.

Mrs Attah who is also the African representative on Bully and Peace Building in Nigeria explained the projection of the institute is to reach out to the public schools and communities in future.

She added that intervention will reach out to at least 750 pupils. The short-term goal is to train 100 teachers in a year and reach out to 1000 children students.

She however appreciated her mentor, instructor and benefactor, Dr. Jean Webster-Doyle and Dr. Terrance Webster as well congratulated the graduating students.

In her remark, Jean Webster-Doyle congratulated the graduating students and charged them to use this course as a tool to help children live a positive and happy life.

“Bullying is a huge international issue, noting that all over the world children are suffering from bullying and no one wants to be a bully and no one wants to be bullied,

“Certainly no one wants to be a victim. She encouraged the grandaunts to listen to the children that suffer from bullying,listen to how they are being bullied,” she stressed.

Mrs Gambo Yakubu, speaking on behalf of the graduating students, appreciated the management of the institution for imparted such knowledge on them within six months.

She promised to be ambassadors of the institute by contributing their quota in peace building starting from her immediate community.

JAMB 2024: How 115 Students Of Solid Foundation Tutors Scored Above 300 In Taraba

Over 115 students from various schools who enrolled with the Solid Foundation Tutors in Taraba State have achieved scores of 250 and above in the 2024 JAMB examination.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation, Mr. William Moses Iro, shared this information with journalists in Jalingo, the capital city.

He said nine (9) out of the over one hundred and fifteen (115) students scored 300 and above while others scored 250 and above in their 2024 JAMB.

The organization was established in October 2015, initially operating at Success Nursery and Primary School in Magami with 48 students. 

Over the years, the student population has rapidly grown, and currently, they have over 1000 students.

In 2018, they requested a more suitable location, and the Taraba State Ministry of Education relocated them to Low-cost Nursery and Primary School, where they currently conduct their lessons.

Mr. William Moses Iro mentioned that the center has over twenty teachers, including specialized teachers for subjects such as Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics. 

They offer a wide range of courses, including English, Mathematics, Financial Accounting, Literature, Government, and Religious Studies. 

For younger children, they focus on developing their reading and numeric skills and also provide additional support for struggling students. 

Mr. Iro emphasized the need for serious commitment from their students and encouraged them to overcome the mentality that certain subjects are difficult.

He said they aim to contribute positively to the education system and empower young people in the community in line with Governor Agbu Kefas’s free education agenda.

Mr. Moses expressed pride in the success stories achieved by the foundation. 

He noted that many students who previously struggled with professional courses and university placements are now excelling in their chosen fields thanks to the foundation. 

Additionally, Iro pointed out that before the establishment of the foundation, many of them were not studying in universities beyond Yola, Taraba, or Maiduguri, but now they are studying in prestigious institutions such as OAU, Unilag, Nsukka, and other universities, pursuing their dream courses.

Mr. Iro shared that he was previously employed at a multimedia company in Ile-Ife, Osun State but was inspired to start the tutorial center in Jalingo to positively impact students and help them achieve their goals.

The classes run from 4 pm to 6 pm on weekdays and from 9 am to 12 pm or 1 pm on weekends and during vacations, they have full-day sessions to cover the syllabus and teach study skills.

According to him, their main challenge is the lack of suitable venues for classes, especially for general subjects like English and Mathematics. 

Mr. William Moses Iro urged Governor Kefas for assistance in providing a dedicated hall for teaching. 

Additionally, they face challenges with the stuffy environment during hot weather and expressed hope for support from the government to address these challenges to enable them to contribute to their vision of providing quality education.

Shettima Launches NEDC’s School Enrollment Drive Programme

Vice President Kashim Shettima has launched the Accelerated Senior Secondary School Education Programme (ASSEP) initiated by the North-East Development Commission (NEDC) in collaboration with the office of the VP to enhance child enrollment drive in schools within the North-East sub-region.

Speaking during the launching of the programme in Bauchi on Saturday, the VP said that consequences of the nation’s action and inaction were evident in all indices used to assess development.

He said while primary education provides a foundation, secondary education is a bridge, adding that the Northeast sub-region has been the victim of inability to enforce a uniform policy to drive school and the persistent cultural perversion to formal education in the country.

“We in the Northeast occupy a quantum of position in ranking of essential services. Education being a key sector of this country, this is especially pronounced in the post primary education, while the Northeast secondary school enrollment drive stands at 19 percent, far below the nation’s 39 percent,” he said.

Earlier, the Managing Director of NEDC, Mohammed Alkali, said that the primary education completion level of 85 per cent in the Northeast is among the best in Nigeria, but secondary school enrolment is a mere 15 per cent, the second worst nationally.

According to him, due to the challenges in the post-primary education segment, JAMB UTME applications and admissions into tertiary institutions in 2019 were the lowest for the Northeast compared to other regions.

He added that, nationally, the Northeast has the lowest number of teachers and the highest percentage 55 per cent of those available are without literacy skills.

The MD also revealed that the challenges in the post-primary education segment include weak quality indices and a wide demand-supply gap driven by economic and cultural factors.

“The Accelerated Senior Secondary Education Programme seeks to boost the post primary education rating across the North East region through improved enrolment into tertiary institutions.

“It’s also to improve skills development as well as the elevation of teacher quality. It would pay special focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and communication.

“These would foster creativity and critical thinking; motivates and inspires young people to generate new technologies and ideas to learn from inquiry-based tasks,” he said.

Alkali also explained that the programme would also raise awareness about after-school possibilities and the potential for diligent students to become successful and prominent contributors to the North East region and Nigeria at large.

He expressed gratitude to the Federal Government especially, the Vice President for the deep interest and commitment to human development in the North-East.
