Investigation: Broken Homes, A Major Cause Of Juvenile Delinquency

Spread the love

By Salamatu Bashir

Juvenile delinquency refers to criminal activities done by a child mostly below 16 years of age for boys and 18 years for girls which violate the law such as rape, burglary, stealing, and prostitution among others.

However, it’s the early stage gateway to adult crime due to the large percentage of criminal activities during the stages of childhood. Also, this causes juvenile delinquency which is usually found in every nook and cranny of society ranging from organizations, social groups/institutions, and interpersonal relations among others.

Moreover, the family, as a learning and socialization environment, is a key protective factor in the development of children and adolescents. When the bond is weak, it is also regarded as a risk factor for juvenile delinquency.

Besides, the family is the basic socialization agency for the children. Children learn basic concepts about good and bad from their families, they make their values and set the norms of society. Family can make or break the personality of the children. In the family, the most important role is played by the parents and siblings. Thus, most of the adolescents who show delinquent behavior in any form belong to families that could not give a firm foundation to the children.

Research has it that, a situation where parents are divorced or separated leaves the children in the family to themselves and prone to influence through peer pressure. When death or marital conflicts deprive children of affection, security, social opportunities, and physical necessities, they may turn to delinquent gangs for support. This indicated that broken homes have a greater influence on female than male delinquents. This is basically because the female gender requires and also attracts more attention.

Unarguably, a girl has both financial and emotional needs which when the parents are unable to meet leave them looking on the streets and may cause them to engage in illegal behavioral acts. This is the reason behind the rape and other forms of sexual harassment among girls.

On the other hand, Boys are usually at a risk of drug intake which is mostly enforced by peer influence, pickpockets due to the unavailability of the basic needs of life, and street rape among other irregularities.

Notwithstanding, bad parenting practices, such as a lack of supervision, over-permissiveness, too much or too little strict discipline, a weak bond of affection, and the inability to set clear limits, represent significant risk factors for delinquency.

Therefore, parents should keep a very close eye on their children and try to make the children’s needs available even when they are separated. They should try to keep track of where they go, who they associate with as friends, and the kind of activities they carry out . This will go a long way in putting society at a lesser risk of harboring young criminals and creating less room for greater crimes in the future.

The Essence Of Political Loyalty: A Pathway To Development

Spread the love

By Usman Abdullahi Koli, ANIPR

“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” This proverb aptly captures the essence of political loyalty and its potential to foster development. Democracy has granted citizens the freedom to express themselves and share their opinions regarding the activities of the government and its leaders. Such freedoms are not only for citizens but for leaders as well, who are entitled to enjoy these rights. Therefore, there is nothing wrong if a leader supports another leader whom he regards as his political role model.

Recently, the Speaker of the Bauchi State Assembly expressed his loyalty to the State Governor, a gesture that is both normal and beneficial. The mutual understanding between the legislative and executive arms of government will result in significant developments for the masses. If these arms are antagonistic towards each other, progress would be impeded. People and leaders should be allowed to express their minds and appreciate whoever they like, as long as it doesn’t prevent them from fulfilling their official responsibilities.

Honorable Abubakar Y. Sulaiman, despite being a leader in the State House of Assembly, has consistently delivered on the mandates he swore to uphold. The Speaker is gradually fulfilling the promises made during his political campaigns, with the people in his constituency attesting to this through the immense benefits they receive. His loyalty to the state’s foremost citizen, who shares the same political party, translates to driving developmental projects to his people. Ningi and its environs enjoy power and water supply, access to qualified health practitioners, standard schools, and a host of other amenities.

Being from the constituency of the Speaker, I can personally testify to the positive impact of his leadership. The improvements in infrastructure and public services have significantly enhanced the quality of life for residents. The alignment between the Speaker and the Governor has resulted in a seamless execution of policies and projects that cater to the needs of the populace.

Moreover, the collaborative relationship between the legislative and executive branches fosters a stable and progressive political environment. This unity not only accelerates development but also strengthens the trust and confidence of the citizens in their leaders. As a citizen of this state, it is reassuring to see our representatives working in harmony to achieve common goals that benefit us all.

The Speaker’s commitment to his constituents extends beyond infrastructure. He has initiated various social programs aimed at empowering youth and women, providing scholarships, and supporting small businesses. These initiatives not only improve the socio-economic status of the people but also create opportunities for sustainable development. His actions demonstrate that political loyalty, when aligned with public service, can be a powerful tool for transformative change.

Furthermore, the Speaker’s efforts in promoting transparency and accountability have set a high standard for governance. His dedication to open communication with his constituents ensures that their voices are heard and their needs addressed. This approach not only builds a stronger community but also reinforces the democratic values upon which our society is built.

Cyber Security Levy: Milking A Dying Cow

By Mubarak Shuaybu Shelleng

The current situation in the country is quite complex and challenging, particularly for the common man. Many people find it difficult to cope with the current economic hardship and uncertainties that this country is facing. The policies implemented by the government have put many lives at stake, as people struggle to survive in the face of these harsh and unfriendly measures.

Unfortunately, many Nigerians have lost hope due to the government’s introduction of policies that have worsened the situation.
After the decision to remove oil subsidies, many businesses collapsed, leaving people with no hope. This government has continued to privatize almost everything and left people in a great dilemma.

The depreciation of the Naira currency has had a significant impact on many businesses. Unfortunately, the government has not taken any effective steps to address this issue, despite receiving recommendations from economic experts. This has resulted in the problem persisting and causing further harm to the affected businesses.

Also, the introduction of electricity tariffs was among the worst decisions made by this government as many parts of the country were incessantly experiencing what is tagged as the collapse of the National Grid. Many states especially here in the north can hardly have stable electricity for two days. Instead of addressing this issue to ensure a stable distribution this government decided to deepen their situation by introducing an electricity tariff.

In essence, the average person living in a remote village understands that Nigeria, as a country, possesses abundant resources that could be utilized to provide necessary social amenities for its citizens. However, the major hindrance to achieving this goal is the poor leadership system, which is characterized by leaders lacking in ideology. This impediment prevents the system from being equitable to its citizens.

Many students in Nigerian higher institutions have been deceived by a student loan scheme that has yet to be put into practice. They were made to believe that this government was the natural successor of the former. Additionally, workers have been struggling to make ends meet as their meager salaries can no longer sustain them for two weeks. They are left with the option to sit and watch the debate on the new minimum wage on television, which is yet to be agreed upon and implemented.

The recently introduced Cybersecurity levy is likely to push many Nigerians into poverty, as the levy will discourage many businesses that people depend on for their livelihoods.

Above all, politicians and stakeholders in this current administration should urgently bring the plight of Nigerians to the attention of Bola Ahmad Tinubu. The renewed hope agenda has now turned into renewed suffering and hardship for many Nigerians.
