The Taraba State Volleyball Unity League, 2022 Season began in Jalingo on Friday 2nd September 2022 with seven participating clubs.

The competition is taking place at the Jolly Nyame Stadium Jalingo and was organized by GAMSA and ASP.

GAMSA and ASP, are the abbreviations of the names of the private individuals that partnered and organized the league.

Speaking after the first match played between Team Duchess and Bangs Spikers, the chairman of the organizing committee, Ashasim Yakubu said that the objective of the league was to bring together all volleyball players within the state to play with each other regardless of their backgrounds toward ensuring unity.

“We brought up this league to encourage each one of us playing volleyball in the state to accept each other and play in harmony,” Yakubu added.

The host, Director of Taraba State Sports Council, Coach George Shitta was excited about the development, saying that ” I’m happy sports development is picking up in Taraba, if you look at it it was organized by the private individuals and that’s a good one, that’s what we have been advocating for. This is the second time we have had such an event, the other one was Beach volleyball.

“So, am happy about it that Tarabans are heading to our calls to come and help the government to develop sports, and let’s try to identify the talents that are bounded in Taraba State,” Shitta added.

George Shitta also explained that they will take advantage of the league to hunt for hidden talents and see what the state can do, as they are preparing for the National Sports Festival in Asaba, adding that the state is gradually becoming a home of volleyball.

“Throughout this year, we hosted National Division II Volleyball, we hosted inter-local government Beach volleyball, we are now hosting the Unity League which is going to run for a while, and the last National Youth Games, Taraba State came 1st in volleyball throughout the country, so, we are going to build on these successes and continue to see where we can reach out,” Shitta said.

Captain of Team Duchess, Gimba Bala who lost 3-1 to Bangs Spikers, appreciated the turnout and described the game as wonderful, while he attributed their failure to the darkness at the pitch as according to him most of his teammates are old people and they were not seeing clearly.

Captain of the winners of the match, Bangs Spikers, Sylvanus Solomon described the game as an amazing one and expressed optimism that his team will win the tournament.

Bangs Spikers defeated Team Duchess in the opening game by 3-1.
