Taraba Attacks: Bissaula Community Insists On Investigation

Spread the love

By Janet Francis, Jalingo

The Ichen community of Bissaula, Kurmi LGA of Taraba State has insisted that an investigation should be carried out on the incessant attacks on its communities allegedly by Ndaka and Chamba Militia.

An elder in the area, Mr. Ebi Bako while speaking to Journalists in Jalingo called the attention of the state, and the federal governments as well as the international community on the need to come to their rescue.

He alleged that the people that are behind the crisis that engulfed Bissaula town on the 16th of December, 2021 are still bent on frustrating efforts to find an amicable solution to the problem.

Elder Bako recalled that on Monday, 15th August 2022 pockets of cartridges (Bullets) were intercepted at Didan village of Kurmi LGA by Vigilante members of the Nigeria Hunters and Forest Security Services, Kurmi Command, but unfortunately, the suspect escaped.

According to him, the intercepted cartridges which allegedly were being ferried to the Ndaka militia to continue their attacks on innocent people of Bissaula were, however, handed over to the DPO in charge of Kurmi LGA.

Elder Ebi Bako, however, alleged that the chairman of Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN), of the local government area, Mr. Emmanuel Zachariah went and claimed ownership of the cartridges that were intercepted, an act he said is questionable.

“The question that readily comes to mind is, does the VGN Chairman has permission to purchase cartridges (bullets) independently without clearance from relevant authorities?

“The Ichen communities of Bissaula before now, have it on good authority that the said Chairman of VGN, Mr. Emmanuel Zachariah has been colluding and assisting the Ndaka/Chamba militia by directing them through Baissa-Kwancha -Akpo forest to launch attacks on Bissaula community,” Bako alleged.

Elder Ebi Bako on behalf of the community called on the DPO of Kurmi LGA to ensure the prosecution of Mr. Emmanuel Zachariah for allegedly illegal possession of ammunition and also produce the escaped culprit as well as make his identity known to the public.

While calling on the government to provide security to the area, Bako noted that since when the Mobile Police that was sent to the area left after three policemen were killed by the suspected Ndaka/Chamba militia, up to date as he was talking no single security has been deploy to the area.

The VGN Chairman of Kurmi LGA, Mr. Emmanuel Zachariah did not pick up calls put to him by our reporter.

On his part, in a telephone interview, Mr. Kefas Ali, Ndaka, popularly known as Chamba by a tribe who narrated their history as far as 1961 alleged that they were marginalized by the Ichen people although the Chambas have been living in the area for over 2 decades.

According to him, most of the attacks being carried out by their people against Ichen were retaliation, but described the crisis as uncalled for and advised Governor Darius Ishaku to stand firm to reconcile the two ethnic groups because no one will benefit from the conflict.

“Ichen people are our in-laws, there are inter-marriages between us, so, we need peace, we don’t want conflict instead we should join hands and fight for social amenities such roads, schools, and portable drinking water among others because as of now we are not enjoying the dividend of democracy. Things I have mentioned we don’t have any good of them, but then we appreciate Governor Darius Ishaku for his support.

“For almost 6 months now since the Governor constituted committee of inquiry to the crisis, till date nothing has been done and people are losing their lives, while properties are being looted.

“We are annoyed because Ichen people have hijacked everything in terms of political appointments, Traditional appointments, even Councillor seat they don’t give us and we have youth that have degrees and Masters. Therefore, please the Ichen should also stop calling us foreigners because we voted for Nigeria in 1961 during Sir Ahmadu Bello (Sardaunan Sokoto), so, we are not Cameroonians,” Kefas Ali emphasized.

When contacted through a telephone interview, Police Public Relations Officer, Taraba State Command, SP Abdullahi Usman confirmed that the uncovered cartridges are still in police custody.

He said the State Commissioner of Police, CP Abimbola Sokoya has ordered for the rest of the person that were caught with the cartridges who in the process of counting disappeared as a result of darkness, and the VGN Chairman of Kurmi LGA, Mr. Emmanuel Zachariah whom the suspect had earlier mentioned his name as the owner of the ammunition.

On the situation of the crisis, SP Abdullahi Usman said as a result of the joint security operation by the police and other security agents, all conflicts between Ndaka, popularly known as Chamba, and Ichen have been subdued, and people are leaving together peacefully.

According to him, normalcy has returned to the Bissaula community in particular, and people have returned to their houses leaving peacefully, going about their lawful businesses, noting that despite the loss of their three gallant policemen during the peacekeeping operation in the area, the police will not relent in its effort to ensuring that peace has come to stay in the area.

SP Abdullahi Usman who described Tarabans as peace-loving people also appealed to them to maintain the tempo, and shun among others rumor-mongering, posting of unauthenticated information on social media, as well as have confidence in the police by sharing useful information that will enable them to carry out their constitutional duty effectively in the state.
