Court Fines Desert Herald N10m Over Defamatory Publication Against Adamawa SSG

A Yola High Court has ordered a weekly magazine, Desert Herald to pay Secretary to the Government of Adamawa State, Malam Bashiru Ahmad N10 million as damages over defamatory publication.

Delivering the judgment, Justice Nathan Musa, the Chief Judge of Adamawa adjudicates that the publication by Desert Herald Magazine on the 25th of August 2020 tagged ” Larai and Adamawa SSG Connection” was defamatory.

After cross-examination of the evidence presented by the witnesses, Justice Musa fined Desert Herald ten million naira as damages and ordered the retraction of the publication, as well as an apology to Mallam Ahmed within seven days.

The counsel to the SSG, Barrister Akamode Aboyemi says the Desert Herald weekly Magazine, published the defamatory publication against his client after failing to secure a contract with the Adamawa State Government and assumed they were denied the contract by the SSG, Mallam Bashiru Ahmed.

He said denting the image of a man known as a true democrat and the engine room of the Fintiri administration propelled them to approach the court to seek justice.

He added that before approaching the court, his client has instructed him to seek retraction of the story and apology of what is now an affirmed defamatory story which he did, but their request landed on deaf ears.

Desert Herald has earlier before the court denied publishing the story claiming the said story is not found in their publication of 25th August 2020, however, forgot to delete it from their website five months after the case was filed against it which has served as strong evidence against the defendant.

Herald Desert had accused the Secretary to the Adamawa State Government of having a dirty relationship with Fadimatu Mohammad Larai asking if she is just a politician or a mistress.

Vigilante Group Arrests 21 Suspected Hoodlums In Bauchi

The Bauchi State Vigilante and Youth Empowerment Agency has arrested twenty one suspected hoodlums terrorizing customers and commuters at Wunti Market in the State Capital.

The State Commandant General of the Agency Umar Aliyu Shayi made this known while parading the suspects in Bauchi.

Umar Aliyu Shayi explained that the suspected hoodlums whom were initially denied access to Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium, the venue of PDP Presidential Rally took advantage of the market to carryout the criminal acts on innocent people

According to him the youth were carrying Knifes, Machetes and other dangerous weapons.

The Commandant General therefore said they would be handed over to Police and Civil Defense Corps for further investigations and subsequent prosecution.

He assured of the agency’s determination to complement efforts of conventional security agencies towards reducing the number crime and criminality across the state.

2023 Campaign: Bauchi PDP Blames APC Escorts Over Killing 20 Year Old Person

The 2023 PDP Campaign Council in Bauchi State has described as unfortunate the recent killing of one Yakubu Yunusa of Akuyam Town in Misau Local Government Area of the State.

The victim was alleged to have been fired by escorts attached to the State APC Gubernatorial Candidate Retired Air Marshal Sadiq Baba Abubakar during his campaign visit to the area.

Addressing journalists on the issue, the Director General of the Campaign Council Faruq Mustapha called on the police to as a expedite action in fishing out those responsible for the killing with a view to prosecuting them.

Faruq Mustapha who alleged that the condemnable action taken against innocent persons may for cause confusion and constitute set back in the state’s political activities called on PDP supporters across the state not to take law into their hands.

The Director General while arguing that Provocative Political Songs and Booing have unfortunately becoming normal in Nigerian Politics blamed the opposition party for not discouraging it’s excorts against extra judicial killing.

When contacted, the Spokesperson of the State Police Command SP Ahmed Wakili confirmed that escorts attached to the APC Gubernatorial Candidate fired opening shots when a group of people attacked their convoy at Akuyam town and killed the twenty years old Yakubu Yunusa who was earlier rushed to Federal Medical Center Azare for treatment.

According to him, the State Commissioner of Police Aminu Alhassan has commiserated with family of the deceased and directed for discreet investigation into the case.

EDs Forum Sensitizes Bauchi Community On Violence Free Election

A group, the Executive Directors’ Forum (EDs-Forum) of Civil Society Organisations has begun sensitisation activities to create awareness on violence free election in Bauchi State.

The Chairman of the forum, Malam Sodangi Chindo said this at the inauguration of a one-day sensitisation exercise in Bauchi.

The theme of the campaign is: “Support Free and Fair Election, Give Peace A Chance in 2023 General Election and Ensure a Peaceful Nigeria”.

He said the exercise aimed at creating awareness on civic rights for the people to vote in a peaceful, free, fair and credible general election.

He urged youths to change the narrative by using their energy to foster peaceful election rather than engaging in acts capable of endangering their lives.

According to Chindo, youths are the most vulnerable group in the election, adding that they should know that violent election would be detrimental to their future.

“Parents need to educate their children not to be involve in political violence and thuggery during the election,” he said.

Earlier, the Convener, Mrs Grace Maikudi said the exercise is aimed at educating the electorate towards ensuring conduct of hitch free and credible election in the state.

“We are also telling the youths that being aggressive will not give you vote, rather you are expected to vote in a peaceful atmosphere.

“We want the general public to know that the power of the vote is in their hands, and if they don’t execute it well, you are the ones to suffer the consequences,” she said.

Also speaking,Mr Ado Solomon urged the youths to shun violence, embrace peace and political tolerance for growth of democratic culture in the country.

He advised them to conduct themselves orderly and peacefully at polling units as well as eschew drugs and alcoholism during the election.
