93 Battalion Attack: Gov Ishaku Donates N10m To Families Of Deceased Soldiers

Governor Darius Ishaku of Taraba State has promised the determination of his administration to give succor to members of the immediate families of soldiers of the 93 Battalion who were killed in a recent military operation against militants tormenting communities in Takum LGA of the state.

The Governor made the promise during a visit to the battalion in Takum on Sunday.

In an emotion-laden voice, Ishaku expressed his sympathy and that of the Taraba State government to the family members made up of their widows and children.

According to him, he personally feels their pains and promised that Government will take steps to assist them, particularly the children who will have to go to school.

He announced a cash gift of N10 million to provide them immediate succor and pledged that the government would do more to assist them.

Governor Darius Ishaku, however, renewed his call on the people of the state to pray for the safe return of the commanding officer of the Battalion who was declared missing after the operation.

Stakeholders Advocate For Improved Reforms In Defense, Security Sectors

Stakeholders in the North East have advocated for Improved policy reforms in the Nigeria Defence and security Sector that would tackle security challenges in the country.

They made the call at one day workshop on reforms in the Nigeria Defence and Security sector organised by the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) with support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands on Thursday in Bauchi

Dr Chris Kwaja, of the Center of Peace and security Services Modibbo Adama University Yola emphasizes the need to improve and strengthen the accountability and transparency in the defense sector.

“Strengthening mechanism for accountability and transparency operational and financial management in line with the principle of Democratic control of armed forces.

“Respect for human rights in line with provision of the Nigerian constitutions, international human rights and Humanitarian rights.

“Strengthening the mechanism for effective civil military relationship to encourage harmony in the Sector.

Dr Kwaja also stressed the need for gender mainstreaming in the defense and security Sector would go a long way in improving the reforms.

Also Speaking, Mr Tijjani Mohammed explained the importance of internal security to the security architecture of the country.

He said the security agencies need oversight functions that would tackle the misappropriation in the security architecture of the country.

Mohammed also emphasizes on security agencies engagement with Civil Society Organisations as well built a confidence of the clients otherwise the society.

In his remark,Executive Director, CISLAC Mr Auwal Rafsanjani, Said Nigeria’s defense and security sector must always be seen as carrying out its mandate in an objective manner, reform initiatives in the sector must remain sacrosanct

“Particularly at a time like this when Nigeria’s battles with an evolving epidemic of multi-dimensional security threats such as the fight against insurgency whose agitation is allegedly based on religious ideology against western education, banditry, kidnapping, terrorism and other armed opposition groups.

The ED Represented by the CISLAC Head of Communication, Abubakar Jimoh stressed the need for reform in the defense and security sector cannot be over emphasized,

“Particularly with respect to financial management, gender inclusion and operational disparities as these have very significant impact on the integrity and effectiveness of the sectors,” Rafsanjani Said

Also Speaking, the Senior Programme Officer CISLAC, Bertha Eloho Ogbimi said that the aim of the workshop is to reveal the challenges security agencies face in the area of financial management, inclusive gender recruitment and disparities in the area of carrying out their operations,

She said at this end CISLAC wants to create an awareness on lack of transparency and accountability in the defense and security sector.

Our Correspondent reports that the stakeholders were drawn from Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) Media and academia from Adamawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba Borno and Yobe States.

Police Declare Bauchi Fed Lawmaker, Shehu Wanted, Place N1m Bounty On Him

The Nigeria Police Force under the authority of the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, has declared member representing Bauchi Federal Constituency, Yakubu Abdullahi Shehu wanted and placed a sum of N1 million to be given to anybody with his whereabouts.

The declaration was sequel to his alleged connection with case of criminal conspiracy, causing grievous hurt, inciting disturbances of public peace and culpable homicide.

This is contained in the Special Police Gazette Bulletin CB: 2685/Bsx/VOL.T/4s shared by the Bauchi State Police Command spokesperson, SP Ahmed Wakil on Tuesday.

The police was seeking for anyone with credible information that would lead to his arrest for interrogation and arraignment on criminal charges.

“Anyone with information that could assist in his arrest should please contact 08151849417 or report at any nearest police station,” the bulletin read in part.

Unknown Gunmen Abduct Two Wives Of Taraba Monarch

Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have abducted two wives of the Chief of Sarkin kudu, Dansalama Adamu in Taraba  State.

Sources told journalists that the incident happened at midnight Friday 3rd February 2023, when the unknown gunmen forced their way into the palace of Chief of Sarkin kudu in Ibi LGA of the state and abducted his family members.

A source from the family told our Correspondent that the two wives are Hajiya Sumayya Ibrahim who is the first, and the second wife Hajiya Maryam Ibrahim.

findings by our Correspondent revealed that the Monarch, a third-class chief was said to have traveled out of his Chiefdom when the gunmen stormed his palace. 

At the time of filing this report where about of the Monarch’s abducted wives are not known and there was no contact between the suspected kidnappers and the Monarch, any of the family members, or associates. 

Police spokesman, Taraba State Command, SP Usman Abdullahi Jada confirmed the incident and said some suspects were arrested by the police in connection with the abduction.

SP Jada also explained that the effort to rescue the abducted family members of the Monarch is on and the suspects arrested have provided useful information to the police which could lead to their rescue.
