IPC Decries Attacks On Punch Newspapers Journalists, Calls For Immediate Investigations

The International Press Centre (IPC) Lagos-Nigeria has expressed concern over the recent attacks on two Abuja-based journalists of Punch Newspapers; Amarachi Orjiude and Solomon Odeniyi.

In a statement signed by the Communications Officer, IPC, Olutoyin Ayoade said reports from the Punch Newspapers specified that Orjiude was picked up by kidnappers in Chika, Lugbe, around noon on Sunday while Odeniyi was robbed around 2 am on Saturday in his Lugbe residence of Abuja.

Orjiude who faced death threats from the kidnappers was robbed of her money and phone, likewise, Odeniyi who was cut severally with a machete by the robbers was also robbed of his phones, money, and belongings.

IPC Executive Director, Mr. Lanre Arogundade, in a statement, said that the state of insecurity in the country has become extremely worrisome.

He added that in a country where press freedom is under attack, journalists and media workers now face additional threats of kidnappings and robbery attacks.

He pleaded with security operatives and relevant authorities to thoroughly investigate the criminal attacks, and prosecute the perpetrators for their crimes as a step to reducing the worsening state of insecurity in Nigeria.

Arogundade also stressed the need for concerted efforts to be taken to ensure that the stolen belongings are returned.

Agya ta kara da cewa an bada naira dubu dari bakwai (N700,000) a matsayin kudin fansa ga masu garkuwa da mutanen, sabanin naira miliyan hamsin (N50m) da suka nema a farko. 

Majiyar tamu ta kuma tabbatar da cewa daliban na cikin koshin lafiya. 

Idan ba’a manta ba, daliban guda biyu, anyi garkuwa dasu ne a wani dakin saida abinci dake cikin Jami’ar a ranar Litini 1/4/2024 kimanin kwanaki goma sha daya kenan.

Breaking News: Abducted FUW Students Regain Freedom

Two students who were previously abducted from the Federal University Wukari (FUW) in Taraba State have been released and are now free.

According to Mrs. Ashu Agbu, the Head of Information and Protocol at the institution, the aforementioned students were released on Thursday night, 11/4/2024, after being held captive for an undisclosed number of days.

Mrs. Ashu Agya told our reporter that a ransom of N700, 000 was paid in exchange for their release and that the students are currently in good health.

Recall that the kidnappers had earlier requested N50 million naira as ransom.

Read How Gunpowder Killed Three Children In Taraba

The Taraba state police command has debunked claims of an improvised Explosive device explosion that has led to the deaths of three children in Didango Geita village of Karim Lamido local government area of the state, contrary to the claims of some of the villagers. 

The State commissioner of police, David Iloyonomon while refuting the claims asserted that the three children who died were playing with a Dane gun on a tree, whose gunpowder later exploded and killed them. 

According to him, the four other children playing under the tree were injured with one fatally affected and receiving treatment at the state’s specialists hospital located in Jalingo, the state capital. 

The incident took place on Saturday when the CP said ”One Danjuma Audu gave the information to the police that there was an explosion which resulted in the deaths of three youngsters and the injury of four others.

”On the receipt of the information, we deployed the anti-bomb unit of the Nigeria Police Force who rushed to the scene conducted a professional and thorough search, and discovered that no exhibit is related to dynamite or IED recovered from the scene.

”Instead, they recovered pallets from a Dane gun which was evident in the bodies of the casualties and suspected to be responsible for their deaths. “Since there was no assailant, it is suspected to be an accidental discharge,” said CP. 

The commissioner of police further revealed that the scene of the incident has been condoned and investigation is still ongoing to unravel more facts.

The police commissioner identified the three deceased children as Miracle Danjuma 11 years old, Liyacheyan Bitrus 12 years old, and Kefas Bitrus 11 years old, with the first casualty Miracle Danjuma the son of the man who reported the incident. 

Others that sustained varying degrees of injuries include Joseph Danjuma 8 years old,  Leah Aluda 8 years old, Godbless Hassan 7 years old, Christian Hassan 7 years old who happen to be the grandchildren of Danjuma Audu, the owner of an irrigation rice farm whom the children followed to assist in the farm.
