The Chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Correspondents’ Chapel in Taraba State, Adamu Sadiq of News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) has been sacked along side other three officials by the congress citing poor performance and incompetence.
During the congress which held at the correspondents’ chapel’s secretariat on saturday in Jalingo, 21 out of 29 members of the chapel passed a vote of no confidence on the Exco.
The motion for the vote of no confidence was moved by Wole Ayodele of ThisDay Newspaper and was seconded by Cletus Benard of Radio Nigeria.
Earlier during the congress, Secretary of the Chapel, Sani Suleiman of FRCN and the Treasurer, Bashir Adamu of Liberty Tv had resigned their positions, citing poor leadership and high handedness on the part of the ousted Chairman.
They also cited interference in the workings of the Exco by people who are not officials and creation of division in the chapel by some members who claimed to be leaders of the chapel and the ousted Chairman, Sadiq Adamu accepted their resignation.
Those affected and subsequently removed from office including Sadiq Adamu (NAN) as Chairman, Salisu Waziri (VON), Vice Chairman, Sylvanus Viashima (The Sun) Financial Secretary, and Emmanuel Awari of Champion Newspaper, Auditor.
The Congress appointed a three member committee led by Janet Audu of Daily Independent as Chairperson, Nahun Sule of the Authority Newspaper, member, while Chikpa Terna of Tribune Newspaper will serve as Secretary.
The committee are to pilot the affairs of the union and conduct a fresh election within three weeks.
Reacting to the development, the ousted Chairman, Sadiq Adamu (NAN) appreciated members of the chapel for the opportunity given him to serve and urged the 21 members to unite the chapel in the interest of all.
“¹I have accepted the decision of the congress, but I want to advise members to be wary of those who double speak.
“I was not finding it easy with my Exco and because of the lack of unity, we were not able to achieve much. I am happy with this development and I can now rest,” he said.
In her acceptance speech, the caretaker Chairperson, Janet Audu of the Independent Newspaper thanked the congress for the confidence reposed in them and pledged to deliver on their assignment.
