NUP Gives Taraba Govt 21-day Ultimatum Over Non Payment Of Pension, Gratuity

The Taraba State chapter of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP) Friday gave the Taraba State government a twenty one days ultimatum to as a matter of urgency to holistically address all the issues of pension and gratuities in the state.

The state Chairman of the union, Comrade Kefas Katan who stated this during a press briefing in Jalingo threatend that if by the end of the dateline nothing is done, all retirees both at State and Local Government Services from the sixteen LGAs will converge in the state capital for a mammoth protest against the state government to press home their demands for prompt payment of their entitlements.

“The NUP in the state deemed it necessary to break its silence to address the teething and lingering problems affecting its members which defied and kind of solution on the part of State Government particularly on pension and gratuity of retirees in the state.

” It is indeed a known fact that many retirees in Taraba State from the services of the sixteen LGAs are facing untold hardships due to their none-enrollment for pension many years after retirement and completion of all procedures for enrolment for pension.” Katan said.

He explained that at the moment, there are over eight hundred (800) retirees from the local governments who retired from service ten years ago but are yet to start enjoying their pension.

Katan maintained that these retirees, their names are in what is called “A waiting list” waiting for someone in the pension payroll from their local government on the same status to die before their names could replace that of the deceased.

He informed that the retirees cannot fend for their families, pay the school fees of their children and settle their rents, adding that their children were sent out of schools and their families ejected from their rented houses resulting into various ailments and sometimes even untimely deaths and all efforts by the state NUP to get them enrolled failed.

“Late last year, the Taraba State Local Government Pension Board claimed that these retirees have been captured in the 2021 budget promising that they will start enjoying their pension in January this year but we are now in June and the affected retirees are still facing the same predicament.”

According to him, even the LG Pensioners who were lucky to be enjoying their pension in the state have an outstanding unpaid one month pension for June 2015 and all efforts by the union in the sate to get them the one month outstanding paid proved abortive.

” When the present administration came on board in 2015, the government started the payment of gratuity in 2016 in batches but sooner than later the payment became epileptic and finally stopped, it is now over right months since the last batch payment was made to few pensioners after about six months of nonpayment.

“More worrisome that, while some States in the North East are releasing Billions of naira monthly to upset accumulated gratuities, Sate Government is giving out a paltry one hundred million naira (N100m) in six to eight months period for payment of gratuity to both state and LG Pensioners which has also stopped for a long time now”. Katan lament.

The state NUP Chairman, however, revealed that the officials of the union had made several attempts to have audience with the state Governor, Darius Ishaku to forward the predicaments of its members but they always meet stumbling block.

Kefas Katan therefore, enjoined the state government to give emphasis on the development of human capital, noting that it is the backbone of all development particularly the prompt payment of Pension and Gratuity to all retirees who supposed to be enjoying the fruits of their Labour after diligently serving their fatherland exerting and degenerating their energies for several years.

Meanwhile when contacted for comment, the Permanent Secretary, Taraba state Bureau for Local Government, the Chairman and Secretary of both state and local government pension board found that all their phones were not going through.
